    1. Inventory. For crafters and gatherers especially, this is an issue. Having multiple gear sets just to suit certain situations will kill inventory, even more so when additional classes and class specific gear comes out.

    2. Server lag. The Ifrit fight is already laggy enough without gearswaps, adding in swaps will just exacerbate the issue with additional information being sent and received. This leads to...

    3. Exploitations. People who played XI could remember how if you gearswapped just right, you could move while casting since the server doesn't register your position while you were gearswapping. When PVP gets implemented, this would make mage classes very unfair, as all you had to do was swap gears while you cast a nuked. You could also swap out of animation locks, but that's just bad game design in the first place to have such a thing.

    4. Patchwork gear. One thing that I really despised in XI was how much of a bum a lot of my jobs looked like. None of the pieces were complementary because I had to wear specific sets which clashed horribly with each other.

We should be able to macro point allotment too! somethings like
    /pta vit-10
    /pta str+10
    /ac "weapon skill of choice"
    /pta str-10
    /pta vit+10
Oh wait that sounds convoluted, unnecessary and strange.

I need a logically sound argument as to why you do not want gear swapping.

    Someone said, "it promotes elitism".

I say gear swapping is beneficial for SE, the worlds' economies, and game play.

BTW Mages can gear swap, melee can't. You have a flaw SE. Fix it and give us gear swapping in ACTIVE mode.
Last I checked once a mage is in battle (has any kind of enmity) they can no longer change gear during battle.

As for "Gear Swapping is common in RPGs", how about MMO's, because most of the MMO's I have played restrict you from swapping gear during battle.

God F'ing god this is an amazing idea, I wish this could be implemented.

I'm not a huge fan of gear swapping even though I did it in XI. However based on the current system it's not even valid imo.

    - Macro system is unreliable out of combat, nevermind in combat.
    - Until server and UI issues are resolved, situation based gear swaps are pointless for many players.

    Trends from XI
    - Promoted 3rd party programs due to an outdated/system limited macro system
    - Exploiting
    - Blinking

    my 2 cents

Since ive responded to this same thread in 20 different variety's ill make it short and simple,
gear swapping is fine for ff11's slow paced(almost turn based) combat, I want FF14 to be a fast paced game with no time for gear swapping.

I thought gear swapping was a great idea in FFXI because it allowed SE to continue to add new content without making the rewards from old content inferior. I do see the negative aspects of it such as inventory space issues, but it also added a lot of good things to the game. I quit FFXI before they raised level cap above 75 so I'm talking about before that.

It was pretty upsetting when the darkhold equipment became completely useless with the addition of materia and ifrit. I'm glad they brought back some meaning to darkhold with rewarding seals for trading in the equipment, but it still leaves a "meh" feeling.

They don't have to add gear swapping to FFXIV, but I hope they find better ways to keep old content worth doing. Since they're adding a system to attach materia without trading them to the crafter, I think it would be cool to see some unique/untradeable materia drops in dungeons.

Exactly. I'm fine without gear swapping as long as they don't make old gear and old content completely redundant with new ones. Materia system might be a good way to go with this.

I'm a bit worried that without gear swaps there won't be any use for AF gear though - at least after a few level cap raises.

Gear swapping is an incredibly stupid mechanic that just makes the game needlessly complex. I would only accept it in a game that is built around it as a game mechanic, this game is most clearly not and thus it would just be a hastily thrown together feature shoved into a game that doesn't work around it. The pace of FFXIV is simply too fast to really do something like this well and have it not screw with the flow of gameplay.

I don't ever want swapping gear for every different skill to be the norm, that's just way too much hassle. There's already enough to worry about in battle between incapacitations, positioning, combos, healing, keeping hate up/down, etc... We don't need to throw another thing onto that pile.
