I'm fine withOUT gear swapping, just make it so mages can't either. If you have any enmity, you can't swap. That'd be fine.

Exactly this. So gear swapping a common essential of majority RPGs in itself does NOT promote elitism. That's an attitude problem.

Gear swapping has nothing to do with being better than another player. Gear swapping is about having essential stats on the fly, switching back and forth for abilities/actions, defense, evasion etc.. This will only help build a player.. vs mobs in game..

But then again nothing should stop anyone from having different gear sets.. especially not gil.. the easiest thing in game to obtain, mind you.

It has nothing to do with making a player better than another, fact. If that's what you think, then you experienced someone with a self centered attitude, plain and simple. Unless we had PvP.. then maybe just maybe I could agree with you. But still sometimes stats doesn't mean crap vs someone with lesser stats AND skill.

Please think of something more creative and/or seamless.

This is not my style of play as I'm very casual so excuse the ignorance but should not the materia system help with this?
So you just want a less exciting game? Maybe arthritis? Maybe lethargic? You're telling me it's too much work to buy different sets of gears for different stats that are used depending on situations, and that it's too much work to create new macros for gears to be swapped during these situations, and that it's too much work to press another button to execute a macro that will gear swap..

This line of thinking is going to kill this game. You want a casual game for casual players, go play scrabble. Seriously.. I think there's more action in FF7... more action than a lethargic person can handle apparently.
