Its a team game and you're playing a job essentially built around a supporting play style. You're not supposed to be able to win a 1v1.In this case, they're actually right. WHM can't really solo anyone because half its toolkit is comprised of pure GCD healing and support. To utilize those healing skills, you start falling behind on damage. However, WHM has a sizeable burst (LB + Seraph Strike + Afflatus Misery). When timed well, they can take a large chunk of an enemy's HP bar out and that's usually enough in a party setting when they're playing around LB as enemies generally will not be at full HP all the time.
If WHM want to kill a full HP enemy in a 1v1 without backup or support, they're going to have to rely on map advantages to make up for the lack of damage (like stunning someone to take volcano damage or get knocked up). Alternatively, they will have to hope the opponent messes up and doesn't use recuperate for quite a while, which generally isn't feasible. Now if you were to compare WHM to SGE, SGE actually has the damage to kill their opponents and don't have to worry as much on healing since their healing and shields complements with their DPSing to access it.
