IMO, that wouldn't fix Island Sanctuary, at least not in the way I envision. All it would do is drive participation through the roof in a still fairly dull and empty experience.

Island Sanctuary's biggest issue is that it decided to use extremely watered-down crafting and gathering, instead of being something even a little more substantive, and just overall very barebones, e.g., could use treasure maps to get additional loot, or even to get more animals, instead of them being something you exclusively capture. The gathering could also incorporate more rarities, perhaps timed/special nodes, and you could potentially have some form of a sightseeing log, and attach paintings to it or whatever,

Heck, you could also add some form of combat to it. The game is literally immune to incorporating multiple systems together - This will always be single-handedly the biggest issue with the game.
