You can NOT play the whole of the game with just one character.

To play the WHOLE of the game you need at least three.
I like the story in this game but as a citizen of Ul'dah and member of the maelstrom I had no idea what the other cities and grand companies stories were like, so I made 2 more character because we are locked into those choices. Maybe in 2.0 that will change, but what good does that do me now seeing as the story is going to be drastically different in 2.0.

Also, some times I get bored of being a Miqo'te and want to see something from the perspective of a lalafell.

And when I'm out of anima and leve allowance but still want to play and feel like I'm accomplishing something it is nice to have an alt to play with...

There are plenty of reasons to have multiple characters in this game just like in XI and the additional cost per slot does not feel to me adequately justified by "I can be multiple class" when at the same time I am locked into key aspects of the game in the same fashion that other games lock you into one class but you can still experience all of the content.

While I do not discount personal reasons for wanting to play with multiple (appearance, general enjoyment, etc.) characters I have to disagree with the statement that you are locked into content to an extent that would warrant an alternative. The main storyline connects in the 20's and the plot is the same once it connects in Uldah. If anything, this is a 2-3hr endeavor that someone can do.

Again, I am not devalueing the storyline aspect but making statements like the above are not accurate, in my opinion.

So, before I reach fade to white, I can change my allegiance and go through all the cities content? I must have missed that option. After recruit I can get to sergeant in all the grand companies and THEN decide which one I want to pledge? Good to know, which NPC do I talk too?

Oh I'd have to reroll and play to at least 45, at least 3 times and then make my choice... No thanks, I'll go with the "I'd rather pay a flat fee and get 8 slots instead of pay $3 for each additional slot"... I suppose I could watch all the cut scenes on you tube... But then what about the " journey"?

Up to the Uldah convergence it is the same. Yes, GC is the same. Look, I clearly stated "imo" - not sure the reason for the tonality in the reply. We disagree on content - no biggie. It doesn't make one better than the other.

There is only a tonality shift if you choose to read it that way...

But back to the crux of my position, prior to "fade to white" the three cities quests are completely different. In my opinion much to their indavidual detriment they all end on major cliffhangers and shunt you rather haphazardly into a unified storyline, that also ends abruptly.

The GC's also have considerable differences in quests, both offered by the headquarters and by NPC's in town that are only available once you pledge to that particular company.

I like to see everything that an MMORPG has to offer. In most of FFXIV's competitors this can be done on one character. At current, FFXIV requires either multiple rerolls of one character, or multiple characters.

Because of this, I dislike the "pay to have more characters" that both XI and XIV employ, and on that we will have to agree to disagree.

But to get back to the original topic...

OP, no. It is highly unlikely that you will ever be able to log in to one account simultaneously in multiple places, there are a host of reasons: technical, and in my opinion nor importantly, security wise that this will most likely never be a possibility.
Typically, most places see a simultaneous log in to accounts as evidence of a possible stolen account. I once had my WoW account locked because I logged on when my brother was using my account and blizzard decided my account must have been hacked.
