I'm mostly just curious to see if the target demographic for the game shifts again. Especially when accounting for societal shifts and trends. Some more healthy competition where MMO's are concerned certainly wouldn't hurt, either.
I have seen some talk of positive things, such as PvE or endgame raiding in general. I doubt the OP would be here if there were aspects of the game they didn't like. I wouldn't just think they want to see the game fail.
Yeah.. that is probably one of the bigger issues. SE can AFFORD to be complacent if they want to. There really are no competitors in this space at all. Sure, people might go back to WoW, but how much is that really going to take from FFXIV? I can personally say, I don't really like any of the other games in the genre myself. I was never a WoW player. I would really like to see what is next for the space.
I mean, there is FFXI, and a decent amount of new and old ffxiv players are playing that now, but it's not really a competitor for ffxiv.

There really isn’t much competition in the space at the moment for better or worse. WoW has proven it can implode at will and while they’ve had a decent expansion will that trend continue or will it plummet again. ESO content isn’t anywhere close to the bigger mmos and we talk about our devs not listening they have it worse. Upcoming mmos blue protocol and throne of liberty won’t do much in the long haul, might get a lost ark situation once more (I want BP to do well as it has an interesting foundation)
GW2 and any others I missed just don’t hit the same retention as WoW and 14 does… so yeah the MMO space is a bit weird at the moment. But I do agree that I honestly will see a demographic shift in 7.0. A lot of the foundational work and QoL leads me to believe they’re going to be changing something long term… guess we will see in some capacity in 5 days.
Agreed. Whatever all our opinions are on the state of the game, there is one universal truth we should all be able to agree on. SE is consistent and doesn't change their formulas much. Why would they change it much in 7.0?
An expansion and its patches have...You can look at almost any minor patch from a previous expansion and find the same category of changes in the same minor patch in another expansion ie. minor pvp changes, savage loot unlocks.
- 12 normal raids
- 12 savage raids
- 1 normal and extreme trial per major patch
- New MSQ every major patch
SE is very consistent and doesn't change very much and this whole "7.0 will be something massively different" is naive.

In other news, there is no technical debt from 1.0.
"We don't have ... a technological issue that was carried over from 1.0, because ARR was meant to kind of discard what we had from 1.0 and rebuild it from the engine."

I was wondering, what would be the opposite for copium ? ... despairium ? doomium ? notpogium perhaps ?
Its weird, there is no Lack of Variety, but the Competitors just arnt really catching up to WoW & FFXIV.There really are no competitors in this space at all. What are the closest?...like, GW2 & ESO? Perhaps SWTOR?
Then there is PSO2, Black Desert and New World. Maybe its just my Circles, but I never hear about these games. Or a few times Ive seen Vids about GW2 and ESO or New World, videos about content and News just Dries Up. I never even get random Memes or Lore Videos about them.
I cant imagine the games are that far behind FFXIV and WoW.
Some of these games have even been out a pretty long while
GW2 is getting a new expansion next month actually (or mini-expansion?), but it's kind of in it's own niche - not small by any means, a lot of people do play it. It also looks dated, it's kind of just there. Its weird, there is no Lack of Variety, but the Competitors just arnt really catching up to WoW & FFXIV.

Black Desert has been growing in popularity lately, apparently they made a lot of the systems less pay to win.
SWTOR, that game is mostly just dead, held up by whales, as far as I am aware. It's pretty much just a bad WoW, but had an alright story.
ESO is relatively popular, but, as far as I am aware, has quite a few balance issues. The PvP is neglected; and supposedly runs horribly (very laggy). I used to occasionally get some complaints about it's PvE endgame popping up in my YouTube even.
New World has reached a stable Niche. It's not dead by any means, but it's not really a big game either.
They all have their own stable niches, that's really it. Everybody in the mmorpg genre is already playing the mmo(s) they like(d). I'd even say a lot hop between the games, but there is nothing to really make anybody quit, with no alternatives.
