You're allowed to be offended all you want but the expectations that random strangers need to care about you being offended is where I have issues with people nowadays.'Not being an asshole' is BS?
The phrase used was "offense is taken, not given" which is used to absolve oneself of responsibility. "I can say whatever the hell I want and it's your fault if it offends you". It's victim blaming. That means intentionally offending people, however they decided to excuse it afterwards.
If that's not what was meant, maybe try using your words more carefully so that they convey what you mean? See? How words mean things?
That's fine. You don't need to give any additional effort to dealing with other peoples problems. But it's easy enough to be conscious of them so that you don't cause them to begin with.
In the current climate where people are taking exception to basic measures such as avoiding known slurs and triggers, majority exceptionalism "I've never had a problem so why should I bother to educate myself? Other people should deal with my ignorance", sometimes it needs to be said.
Or I can just not bother dealing with you because I hate people who expect other people to walk on eggshells around them. That's fine.
