My friends and FC, who are all Veteran players since ARR, have stopped playing FFXIV. They got bored of the recycled content. The nerfs and of course the lack of quality content.
It's not the the missing longevity alone, but also the poor effort of SE content lately.
There is basically nothing to do for someone who want's to play this game on a daily basis, because you don't have to invest your time in this game anymore.

This play another game menality is not good for an MMORPG, which is supposed to be a bit grindy to keep the playerbase busy until the next patch arrives.
That's how MMORPG's work to stay alive.

But the design decision from SE are safe and boring. They are catering players who don't actually play this game much, instead of catering the core playerbase who supported them from the start and still want's to enjoy this game to the fullest.

They were so grateful to every 1.0 player who stayed with the game throughout 1.0 and on to ARR, and now it feels like they just don't care about the people who have stayed with the game for 10 years. Now they just want people to play for a day or two every 4 months and play other games in the mean time.

Well they'll get their wish, seemingly. All that's left for me this expansion is no more than a few hours of content in 6.4. Then after that unless things take a turn for the better in terms of the abysmal writing we've seen in Endwalker, 7.0 won't be a definite purchase and my FFXIV journey may as well be over.

They needed the people who subscribed even at the end of 1.0 to get ARR off the ground in the first place and they needed them to breathe life into 2.0 because they couldn't be sure that they would attract enough new players.


Right now the game is popular enough that every single veteran who leaves is easily replaced with a sprout. Although according to the last Lucky Bancho census the influx of new players is in decline, so I guess we'll see what happens when those new people reach the state where they have completed all the old content they were interested in and only have the new patch content to satisfy them.

That's exactly the case. And that's a shame. In the past subscribers were rewarded with glamour outfits or a mount as a thanks for their loyality. But somehow SE gave in to those people who were complaining about that. That's kinda when it all started.
I've supported this game back then with all my heart. I wanted success for FFXIV so badly, because the game deserved it. But SE is all about money and not about loyality. That's why they are catering the new mass, which obviously don't have the needed mindset for an MMORPG and think of FFXIV as an 5 minute per day mobile game which you play while sitting on the toilet. In the end the success of the game killed it for me and many others. But what goes up, must come down. And the higher you raise, the faster you fall. That will be the case when SE doesn't change course in 7.0. Mark my words.

The words of literally every expert doomsayer for every expansion, every game for a few decades. Don't worry they're fine for a long while, many other more niche games are still thriving despite much more questionable choices.
