That doesnt change the fact the game isnt "thriving", and the fact that steam charts are a valid source for statistics because they provide a decent sample. I never said the game is empty, but it's not as healthy as the usual people try and make it seem to be.

I'm not sure why you can't stand the reality that the game *is* thriving, or why you seem so desperate to want it to fail, but it's doing beyond fine. Queues are fast anytime, even when I queue for very specific and less-played things like the 1st and 3rd NieR raids. Hunt trains are filled even at "off-peak" times like weekday mornings.

And no, just because something provides a "decent" sample doesn't mean it's useful for general extrapolation. Statistically, that sample needs to be "random" for it to work, and limiting your data solely to those players voluntarily choosing to play through Steam destroys any semblance of it being random. Also, if YOU want to claim Steam data is valid, the impetus is on YOU to prove that people using Steam are similar to those using different launchers (Hint: they aren't). You don't get to make an invalid claim and then say it's up to others to prove you wrong; that's not how mature adults debate something.

It doesn't take many braincells to work out that the game hemorrhages players after every single patch release, people return, smash out the 2 days of content that is supposed to last 4-6 months, then unsub.

Minus the ridiculous hyperbole of "hemorrhaging," it's true of every MMO in existence that the playerbase spikes when new expansions or patches release, and then gradually drop over time. It is physically impossible to create enough content at the rate no-lifers will consume it. It's not even close. There will always be those that blow through anything that gets added and then unsub. They're also a small minority of the larger playerbase that doesn't have any significant impact on the community at large.

to be fair, back in the old days. Trying to create an account of ffxiv on steam was one of the most annoying things ever. People were exhausted after registering a new account xD

EW should have the fastest and furthest drop of active players than anyother expansion so far, but for many reasons; Far less grindy content, an extra month between each major patch, and the post covid wave of delayed games finally dropping this year. After beating the base EW story to conclude the arc, this is prolly the best expansion to skip out on. Pop back in after 6.5 and we'll likely still have 6+ months of a wait till the next expansion launch, plenty of time to catch up then.
