So I often see people praising onion knight as a job and wishing for it to be playable in 14 and various other job-centered FF titles, but... I don't get it? What even is onion knight's theme? What is its draw? What kind of job is it even supposed to be? A knight? That already exists. Does it use magic? Does it do anything special? I legitimately have no idea.

    What's the draw?

The draw is largely nostalgia for the classic aesthetic, it's the base job in 3- And in the 3 re-releases and tactics it holds hidden mechanics that make it a fun jack of all trades. The series calls back to it fairly often as an item, it was even one of the ultimate weapons in X

It's not very special really. It's just the other classic FF aesthetics are well represented so there's no need to ask for them (e.g. White Mages robes being white with red cutouts, Summoners having horns, dragoons having dragon helms etc.).

But to be clear I dont want it as a job, just gear sets that call back to that classic aesthetic.

Its just an amusing "default" job the characters in FFIII start off with because according to the devs "they have layers to peel off". But it wasnt meant to be more than just that once you get your first set of jobs. Its also famous because Onion Knights have a secret where if you level up your character to lv.99 they get actually get insane stat gains to the point of outclassing every other job. Also the final dungeon there are enemies that can drop the fabled onion equipment which further boosts their strengths.

It's more of a legacy thing, the gimmick of Onion Knight is that it has *dogwater* stats from level 1-89, then starting with level 90 and up, its stats start to massively spike, giving it perfect maxed stats at level 99, it's an example of Magikarp Power that is older than Magikarp itself, it goes a step further in the 3D version, where Onion Knight is a secret job and thus given more tools, including full access to White and Black magic.

People had good experiences with Onion Knight, thus they want Onion Knight in the FF MMO, that's it.

Not exactly, while Onion Knight is the starting Job in the Famicon and Pixel Remaster versions, in the 3D version Onion Knight is a secret Job, owning to its legacy in original FFIII, Freelance is in turn to fill the role of "starting job" in place of Onion Knight, and unlike original Onion Knight, Freelance is given no special characteristics.
