I note that the quote was from a live letter 10 years ago, when competition for housing was, perhaps, not expected to run out given the then current player population. So, not a lie (in 2013), but a gross underestimation of the number of actual players the game would eventually have. Wishful thinking, rather than outright lies.

It's nothing that a massive influx of server hardware couldn't address at this point. Or a massive rewrite of the housing system for the game. What content should we agree to ditch in order to get there?

Would players with current housing still subscribe at all if they were ensured that the data for their house interior would exist forever?

What price should a house become in a revamped housing system? Free? 10 million gil? 100 million gil for a Mansion?

Would a housing instance that can only accommodate a single player be ok?

Perhaps players should come to a consensus about adapting a single design case for housing, before saying "make it like X" or "make it like it is today, but ...".
