I note that the quote was from a live letter 10 years ago, when competition for housing was, perhaps, not expected to run out given the then current player population. So, not a lie (in 2013), but a gross underestimation of the number of actual players the game would eventually have. Wishful thinking, rather than outright lies.

It's nothing that a massive influx of server hardware couldn't address at this point. Or a massive rewrite of the housing system for the game. What content should we agree to ditch in order to get there?

Would players with current housing still subscribe at all if they were ensured that the data for their house interior would exist forever?

What price should a house become in a revamped housing system? Free? 10 million gil? 100 million gil for a Mansion?

Would a housing instance that can only accommodate a single player be ok?

Perhaps players should come to a consensus about adapting a single design case for housing, before saying "make it like X" or "make it like it is today, but ...".

1. The purpose of the auto demolish wasn't to keep people subbed, it was to open plots from players who weren't playing anymore, so the point is irrelevant. In essence they're the same but the motivation for the change is different, I at least would like to believe that the original intent wasn't to hold people's houses for a monthly ransom but what do I know. It probably affected their decision to add the feature, sure (every company loves money), but it shouldn't be a deciding factor in the least.
2. Irrelevant. But if there's actually enough plots for everyone, it wouldn't make much sense to make them so expensive that most players wouldn't be able to afford them. That's just gatekeeping for no reason.
3. I can't speak for everyone but I sure would be fine with the wards being completely abolished. A customizable island of your own with the plot size you want beats dumpster diving for trash in the wards as you don't have a chance in hell for any of the good plots.
4. Why would the players need to come into a consensus about it? I think it's the developers job. SE can start paying me a sub if they want me to come up with ideas for them. The only thing we can really say is that we've had what over 9 years with the current system and it just is not working, at all, so they need to come up with something better that is way more accessible.

Did... did this person just trick himself into believing an obvious lie was not a lie in front of the whole forum? Sometimes I think I can't be surprised anymore, and I was aware of the existence of this process, but witnessing the whole thing happen was astonishing. It's like watching a Blasphemy come to life.

Don't bother replying to him. He refuses to listen to anything that implies Squeenix or Yoshi could have done anything wrong. It's like arguing with a brick wall.
