I am a bit intrigued by the idea of 'taking a break'.

Because is a month's worth of subscription really worth the few hours of content dropped by the most recent patch?

Or does he mean wait for - insert random number here - patches to drop and then make your return so it's worth the money spent?

No idea. I subscribe for 6 months at a time.

If I want a break, I do something else:

Watch C-Dramas (50 of those 40 minutes episodes takes a big chunk of time).
Listen to K-Pop (and classical, and American pop, and New Wave and ...).
Read books (Danmei, Manga, Light Novels, fan-fiction of those 50 episode C-Dramas).
Watch The Eminence in Shadow. (Japanese and English dubs).
Play table top RPG games (mostly D&D, Pathfinder).
Play other MMORPGs and other video games.

and then I go back and play more FFXIV. The game is not My Life.

The $15 per month is not financially difficult, although I suspect it might be so for some.

I'd like to ask how what you do outside of the game is relevant to my inquiry?

Also the justification that patches should be disappointingly miniscule will only encourage the developers to continue doing so.
