Many cultures around the world are represented in art, literature, film, and games, and I've never heard of needing to pay "cultural royalties." The answer to wanting to control how your culture is represented is education. Not demanding payment.

Seems like a fleece attempt since the article mentions them being open to a "partnership" (ie, money). You can feel bad for a group all you want, doesn't mean they are entitled to control the artistic and commercial works of everyone in the world around them, nor does it seem as far as I am aware they can demand money any time someone features an outfit even remotely resembling things they like to wear.
Because it doesn't exist. Culture does not "own rights" and can't copyright culture. This is all smoke and mirrors. Cultures cannot copyright, as culture itself (like everything else) changes about every 40-50 years and is ever-evolving. Culture is NOT property.
Okay, so I started wearing tennis shoes as a child. So does every other child. Should my parents sue the next door neighbor because their kid is wearing the same shoes as I am? Of course not, that's silly. This is no different. Wait yes it is - this is a fricking VIDEO GAME.
(And BTW, I am of Scandinavian decent, Finnish, Swedish, Scottish, Norwegian, etc. and descendant of the Niall of the Nine Hostages, and of Chief Hokolesqua). Should I sue The Sami Council because they don't align with my cultural views of how weapons grade stupid they are being with this?

And to whomever I read in this thread compared this to racism - please pull your head out of the sand, and stop being offended for the Council. You are comparing apples to monkeys, stop it.

Culture has no property, yet a culture doesn't exist without it's people. Culture, traditions, ancestral techniques and knowledge are maintained and passed on by a specific group of people that nurture it. Culture is also a choice and it's not hollow, it has context and people behind it. If society is not able to actually include the people that are making this culture alive and hold the knowledge, involving it into artistic processes and the production of entertainment regarding that culture, it dies.

Yes, this is a video-game, but the mind-set is the same. You might want to try pick a game and act like it's something that has little to do with society and how you view the world but at the end of the day a video-game is a product of the entertainment industry. The logistics behind the company choices impact things, it exists, it is part of our world, it's not your safe bubble so I'm not sure why you can't bring important discussions into it.

You can bring a mashup of different cultures, and histories and narratives with morals and values and messages but you can't talk about a discussion present in the real world? Oh please, spare me. People love to talk about how "deep" and "beautiful" ffxiv history specially because it talks about society, but they still want to think that a video-game shouldn't allow any discussions that exist in the real world when it constantly benefits from it.

Again this isn't about you, yourself, I know how it's hard to stop individualizing everything and talking about your own little experience and seeing the bigger picture and the bigger discussion around this that involves communities, institutions, philosophy and things way bigger than you... I'm not even talking about the council itself because I don't know their history, but the idea that thinking about inserting a traditional attire in a way that's more aligned with the communities that developed and maintain that attire in the first place shouldn't be absurd tbh.

Again, sometimes I feel like people can't really understand WHAT is a tradition specially if we're talking about indigenous groups and how it has a very different weight. lol

Yep. An indigenous attire is a representation of a people and their culture. Usually with this sort of stuff people just ask you treat with respect. But seeing Greyhawk literally comparing it to tennis shoes just makes my eyes roll. Whats next? Are they going to compare ripped jeans or a t-shirt to the equivalent of a native american's ceremonial clothing such as with the new world attire?

Considering they gave the Pope a headdress, tennis shoes are more sacred these days.

So you don't think there's something wrong with giving a sacred ceremonial headdress to the leader of an organization that actively worked to destroy your entire people's culture?

I mean, did the headdress make them do that? That's a gnarly hat!
