Considering DRK traditionally shaves its HP to attack and not only they redid that + we have a tank whose invuln has them use their entire HP bar as a flex, I'm sure they'd work something out.

People shouldn't take these skills at face-value. We don't do that for how DRK works, we didn't do that for how AST works and we don't do that for how RDM works. All those jobs had to be reworked with some thought to be implemented. Not to mention, on neither incarnation of SMN does it do what the job does traditionally. We don't need to be tied to the Learn mechanic. We don't need to be tied to select spells. We don't even need to have them work exactly as they worked in FF5. You can learn spells off of cutscenes and natural progression; just call it observation and experience. Our character in-lore doesn't stand still anyway. "But my character never fought that enemy, so how would they know that ability?", it's implied. So much in the game is implied and we don't make a fuss about it.

Self-Destruct doesn't need to blow up your HP, just as much as using Dark Arts didn't blow up your HP. Just rework skills into being our own replication of enemy skills. It's not like what we do is identical to what enemies do anyway all the time, some skills are reworked to the game, and others even have additional effects. Plus, it's stated directly that what we do is approximate what enemies do somehow via our own human, mortal capabilities.

If I limited myself to the original design verbatim, then I'd expect Red Mage to make more use of the rapier. I'd expect Astrologian to be able to still use Time Magic and all the other stuff Orran Durai can do (throw rocks when). I'd expect DRK to absolutely blast its HP bar with every ability. I'd expect SGE to be a mix of lv 60+ BLM and WHM. And I'd expect White Mages to be able to put a buff on people so that they'd be instantly raised the moment they die. But we don't have that. Because stuff like that doesn't fit an MMO. Blue Mage's entire thing is to be able to use enemy skills, the Learn mechanic just ensures you keep those skills rather than drawing out of them and fail to learn them. That's it. That's all there is to it. Blue Mage didn't have to be a minigame. But people couldn't get past the way the traditional version worked, and the traditional version cannot obviously be added without modification. And overall I don't get why people are so resistant to modifying this one job when we've done the same for so many others.

Because every other job followed the normal rules of their games, BLU never did. BLU has always twisted the rules to a point where it has often been declared a gamebreaker just due to how powerful those enemy skills can be.

You could say the same for Dark Knight, Summoner, and various other iterations of these classes across the franchise. Enough.
