as long as 3rd party tools exist, there will be some that accept and use them, others who are indifferent, others who are outraged and will shake a stick and want to raze the ground with flaming pitchforks out. Yoshi-P said they've basically done all they can without levelling the play field and that would send some people on a crusade to wipe the tools out. he doesn't want to give those kinds of people a reason to take up arms.

So my take away from what he's saying here is that he's well aware of their usage (because of course the dev team arent ignorant) and if he could have his ultimate way he would do what he can to nip their usage in the bud. However being both a gamer, game director and one of the higher ups in SE, he's stuck in this awkward middle ground as he realizes both sides case; If he decides to pull a manhunt on all FFXIV addon, the backlash from the community would be too much, however the other side of people using parsing addons to gate keep other players is also something that needs to be considered. We're not all saints, even if you're a parser and reeeeallly believe that 3rd party tools are meant for solely personal improvement, will be abused to bully others. Its a reality that we need to stop pretending it doesnt exist and also its a nature that's very easy to do amongst an MMO community.

Ultimately he just wants people to continue to enjoy the game, which is why he has the "dont ask, dont tell" philosophy with addons in FFXIV. If people keep it to themselves then we'll have no problems, if you happen to cross in the eyes of the ToS enforcers, then expect to be punished.

I honestly will never understand why something like this seems to be like an existential crisis to people to grasp.

Nice to see he hasnt changed his mind, I think SE stance is the best since at least the problems dont really appear in game and are limited to tryhard discord groups since you would get banned mentioning DPS ingame.

In other mmos where addons are legal you get a ton of issues
-DPS meters resulting in some really sad people whining about dps in a normal raid or a trial where you can clear it with 2 dps down lmao
-Turning mechanics into a joke because as if the visual signs the developers give arent enough, you want your hand held by external raid support addons.

As he said trying to destroy FFlogs would be too much effort and pointless, because at the end of the day these sites will keep popping up

That's one thing I'll never understand. Like, how are you gonna have a bunch of difficult content with hard enrages, but not let anyone know exactly how much damage they're dealing without resorting to either 3rd party addons or shudders digging through the battle log? Not even getting into the fact that said addon also identifies issues such as figuring out who's healing effectively or throwing Medica 2's into the wind, or whether or not people are actively using their mitigation skills.

Like man, even a grading system like in Devil May Cry would serve as better feedback than the Stone Sea Sky trials which can be either overtuned or undertuned depending on your job.

Because the actual reason they ban parses has less to do with toxicity and more about coddling the playerbase. They want better players to essentially carry inexperienced or downright bad players. Which won't happen if DPS meters were made public. Not to mention, it would make players feel bad seeing they're getting out-damaged by the tanks.

Alas, without hard enrages, content has virtually no bite. You see it in normal mode where people can just continuously throw bodies at the boss until it inevitably dies. This is why they've allowed parsers and FFlogs to occupy a grey area. It serves a necessary evil for them while also being something they can easily wash their hands of.

You totally missed the point he's trying to make. Hes trying to avoid labels like this and splitting the player base. You take one players thing and they will complain about what the other one has that usually devolves into an endless game of "but they are doing this".

He's in nobody's camp. He's an employee so he has to abide by his companies rule. As the producer, if he could smash FFLOGS to bits, he would because he knows that there are people who can't use information properly, much less direct it properly. On the other hand, as a player, he knows there are people who like parsing because they can better themselves and there's a community that like to better one another and improve one another with it. As a whole, he's discussed this issue way too damn much for his liking and he's basically saying the same thing he's been saying since day 1: Don't ask, Don't tell.

Somehow, both sides have managed to just not wrap their heads around that last part and continue to push the envelope every fucking year and I can share the man's frustrations cuz it's getting tiring as fuck.

I would prefer if they actually were more active in hunting and eliminating RMT bots. Make it costly for them and the price of gil goes up. The price of gil goes up, then there will be less buyers. There are less buyers then rmt becomes less lucrative and they will either have to give up or double down on PF clears for money and hope that they avoid the b& for breaking ToS like that. Oh well, lol.
