Like, let's be realistic, what would "link numbers" even do? Striking dummy numbers? Death count included? It lacks any and all context, it is literally just a damage meter meant for personal gauging, so a novice could at least get a rough idea if whatever the f*** he is doing is actually doing more than the last thing he did.

This isn't the first time and won't be the last time Yoshida had a different take on a topic that many disagreed with. A personal damage meter is literally only beneficial - if the community behaves like a bunch of douches, the Harrassment Report is only a few clicks away, literally the same thing as currently.
Addendum to my post (I'm intentionally not editing):

I may have forgotten to consider how passive-aggressive the JP community may be. On many occasions when Yoshida has said "please don't be so mean to the devs" they meant the JP side. Knowing they also have public blacklists and some absurd levels of social norms, I can definitely see an issue by the JP playerbase treating it like this.
