Why are English-speaking people defending expressions of racism and xenophobia from other countries? Many other online games are cracking down on racist expressions. FFXIV was supposed to be less toxic than they are. We want to go backwards while everyone else is moving forward?

This issue shows less about Japanese values towards racism and xenophobia and more about OUR own values. If we accept it over there, what’s stopping us from accepting it here at home too?

The fact that most naysayers aren’t even calling it a mistranslation is also concerning. They’re outright defending the nature of expression even if it didn’t actually happen. Which leads to a more unsettling thought: if it didn’t happen, would you wish that it did?

It is absolutely racism, but since they are Japanese you want to forgive them

If it was a German or someone else who would have acted like that you would have screamed racism I guess

You have to stop imagining that Japan is like in the anime and that Japanese people are all nice, the truth is that there is a lot of hate.
These people are racist and Japanese but they are not the majority like in any other country

We do not know if it was racism or not. It could be several things. It could be a bad translation. It could be as has been suggested that the OP went into DF rather than PF to learn which is against the accepted norm on JP servers and performed badly then could not be communicated with to correct the problem. It could be racism. We just have no way of knowing for certain from the evidence in the OP.

Before I called it racist I would want the original Japanese text and to have someone I trust translate it. I would also want it in full context of the events. We do not have that.

I was doing EX4 in 'DUTY FINDER', something that we do on JP servers when the content is pretty new, and everyone just learns the fight.

After 2-3 wipes leading into transition, i was removed from the group and didn't understand why until i went and translated some of the chat to english, where i was refered to as a "Stupid Foreigner' and told to 'go home'.

This is the first time in about a year i have seen people acting like this, the last time was 6.0 release in EX1/2 duty finder.

Just being clear, this is NOT attacking the JP playerbase, it's just sad to see that some of them still harbor bad feeling towards international players when some of us have played on the servers since 2013.

Any attitude like this is unacceptable from anyone in the game, Duty Finder will put you into groups with ANYONE. Please use party finder and make 'XX Only' groups or remove "E" from your matching settings if you do not want to participate in international parties.
Tell me you know nothing about Japanese culture without telling me you now nothing about Japanese culture. You'll see signs like this all over Japan:

Well then, at least historically, Japan was never racist or xenophobic.

From what I've read, the Japanese effort to conquer Asia during WW2 wasn't rooted in a hatred of foreigners, but rather in the idea that the Japanese as a people were superior, and therefor they had a duty to lead the other people of Asia to peace and prosperity.

Sort of like the "White Man's Burden" philosophy England used to justify expanding the British Empire.

Feeling you are superior isn't correlated with hatred. If it was, I'd hate almost everyone.

Even if it is true? How can the truth be racist?

Something other than what SassyAssassin claimed it means.
It does not mean you hate someone. or fear them.
It does mean you treat them differently because of what race they are.
E.g.: Hiring based on racial quotas is racist.
So what's the difference between a slur and calling someone a stupid foreigner? They both have negative connotations based on ethnicity; calling a Hispanic a "stupid foreigner" while they're in, say, the American Midwest is pretty much an indicator of what they think about said race. Saying "stupid Chinese/African/Japanese/Spaniard/whatever" would be just as bad lol. Saying a slur is just rawdogging it at that point.

Uhh, hatred of a race is deeply rooted in racism. You can go check out how the black basketball team in China are treated. Asian Americans/African Americans have had really had racism incidents towards each other for years. Hate is what leads to different treatment, btw. It's not like hatred and racism are mutually exclusive concepts.
"I hate Indians because their food stinks" is quite literally a racist belief. Or you can go into the deep end of post-9/11 America: "I hate all Indians because they're are all terrorists." ect..

    No they don't.

Go watch "Crazy Rich Asians" twice: once to enjoy it, it's a stellar rom-com, and the second time to study how the main character (MC), who is 100% ethnic Chinese and born in China, is discriminated against by her fiancee's mother -- who is also 100% ethnic Chinese -- because she is a foreigner.

It's not MC's ethnicity that is the problem, it's that MC was raised in America, and the potential mother-in-law thinks that means MC has some stereotypical values that make MC a bad choice of spouse for her son.

Ethnicity may be highly correlated with place-of-origin, but it isn't determined by it.
