There's a little bit of irony in that, given that ARR launched as a sort of WoW clone and it's what saved the game. It's fine to look to other games in the genre and see what may or may not work for your own game, btw. I would say S-E needs to look at something because the volume and quality of content has taken a downward slide since the end of Stormblood imo.

that's a misconception. its UI was inspired by WoW as was its ability to jump.

however it's actually inspired by ultima online. yoshi-p has stated this repeatedly. it's just western media/gaming news outlets latched onto him vaguely mentioning WoW and because WoW is bigger name here, it got brought up the most. almost all of the older news articles in japanese about FFXIV mention his experiences in ultima online far, far more than WoW.

The original FFXIV was a failure of unprecedented proportions and I was entrusted with the duty of salvaging it. When taking the lead to relaunch a failed project, I don’t think you can afford to have the type of game you’d like to create in mind as your motivation. But I was playing WoW, and used that as a form of study. I deployed what I’d learned through the various teams and together we used that in development.

Yoshida has mentioned other MMOs, like he really enjoyed play Dark Age of Camelot, I believe he mentioned Lineage before, Ultima Online obviously, other games- he has self professed he's fairly hardcore gamer and has talked about some of those games in concept of being a bit hardcore player.. But in context of WoW here... He has out right said, on multiple occasions, that WoW was used as a form of inspiration and learning (I'm sure on what not to do sometimes too). As well as Guild Wars 2, if I recall correctly.

On the topic at large, I really hope they continue to check out other MMOs both what they're doing and what they plan to do in order to encourage and educate themselves on what is working well, what doesn't work well, and just what is going on. There are things that other MMOs do substantially better than FFXIV, and then things FFXIV does exceptionally well in comparison to other games (of course there are bias / preferences, so like "that's a good idea, but I wont do it because it doesn't fit here").

Maybe even for my selfish reasons lol- Like long ago I had asked for really interactive mount system and that it would be fun 'i totally promise bro' lol and most didn't buy into it, but then like a year later GW2 came out with a mount system that is frequently considered one of the best mount systems in MMOS, and now recently WoW is taking large inspirations off that... Might be able to convince SE to improve mounts now :3.

again, he has mentioned wow -- but not nearly as often as he mentioned ultima. he's told entire stories about experiences in ultima and mentions them far more in JP interviews. all you did was link exactly what i said, the few fragments of WoW he's mentioned that western media decided to cherry pick and rehash again and again simply because WoW is more popular here.

I'm not saying he doesn't talk about Ultima. I'm saying he's personally, self worded, literally attributed lessons, and mentorship, from WoW. We need say no more for the validity of the statement as the statement comes from him himself.

Which in context of the discussion is that it would be silly to not be able to reference WoW, and not be told 'go play WoW (or other game), when the man himself says he has referenced WoW (and other games) as mentors.

Of course he has used other MMOs, and he might like other MMOs a lot more (I'm sure he does given he has talked about DoAC /very/ favorably before), that's not relevant to the point of the conversation though.

Point is "WoW has been a mentor to FFXIV". Maybe not the sole mentor, and maybe not always in good ways (could be Yoshida saw an idea and was like LOL NOPE, THAT SUCKS) but that's all we need to conclude that "WoW has been a mentor to FFXIV". Which then directly justifies using, WoW, among other games, as a way of exampling cool (or bad) ideas, and not the need to 'go play those games' if we want to talk about them for lessons to learn, and I think personally more importantly how they might work live. Because an idea on paper can end up being quite different in reality, unfortunately.

What did ARR have in common with UO at all though? ARR was a pretty standard WoW clone with WoW clone jobs. SMN was a cheap knockoff of Warlock. Warrior uses the same kind of fury system as WoW. I could go on but you get the point.
