The game has way too much emphasis on giant flashy glowing effects and particle storms for everything. If anything it makes it less impressive because the flash hides whatever's actually happening.
I agree, I wish they would take it down a bit (a lot). I find it impossible to play with my party's effects on.

HW had jobs that actually felt unique to themselves, something this expansion sorely lacks.
I don't want Bowmage per se, but Powerful Shot and Blast Charge from pvp feel really satisfying. I think casting while slow-moving is something that fits p.ranged good.
SMN is the biggest offender, the giant beams get tiring very fast.

Hard agree
I had to shut all effects off because it was so bright and obnoxious and distracting I couldn't tell what was going on
...and the tradeoff is that my character looks like she's flailing about like an idiot in combat now

It's a sad case of uh... animation power creep?
With each expansion animations have to get more extravagant in order to showcase their increased power visually, it'd be pretty underwhelming if Glare III wasn't a big jump from regular Glare.
But that said we're 5 expansions deep now so we're definitely starting to reach a point where things are just too flashy.
ARR zones are the prettiest.
I am perfectly OK with how healers currently operate
You can always give unsolicited advice, it's always morally correct

At the risk of making some people upset:
People expecting Animal Crossing/Harvest Moon levels of depth from Island Sanctuary, which essentially is a mini game in a much larger game, are completely lost.
