Perhaps instead of finding ways to punish people lucky enough to own a house in FFXIV...we could instead push the development team to actually make it a part of the game that is available to everybody? It can be done. Rival MMO's have done it. Some of which are even older than FFXIV itself.
ESO is a bad example in this because all there housing is instanced housing. So they have a pretty good reason not to tax it cause everyone has the opportunity to buy any house(they even throw in a free apartment as a quest reward) with in game gold, premium currency, and achievements being the only barrier of entrance for some houses.
