As someone who is more a single player RPG fan than an mmo fan I’m sorry to say but FFXIV has key failings that prevent it from delivering on that front as well. As wonderful as the Trust system is, it quickly falls apart when the narrative makes me despise my own party members due to their lack of development. Job design ranging from great to bewildering makes for an uneven experience depending on what you end up choosing.

If you want a single player MMORPG, then honestly FFXI despite its difficulty feels more rewarding than FFXIV. There I get to collect and choose from a huge list of potential party members, and given the various forms of progression you can literally do anything you want with your character. You can even have your own house there, completely removed from placard spam and bugged lotteries.

In any case, both single player games and mmorpgs need good gameplay, *functional* features, and a story that at the very least provides an interesting basis for the world without needless convoluted mechanics like time travel loops and “ultimate despair” being thrown in at the absolute last minute.

Personally I just find myself struggling to be friends with people that refuse to wall pull or even AOE properly and, in fact, seem to refuse to learn no matter how many times that I try to teach them.

This sounds sarcastic, but there's a serious element to it: the story tries to sell me this idea that the SCIONS (shudder) are these AMAZING ANIME HEROES!!! with their flashy cinematics and cutscenes and EPIC MOMENTS!! that keep getting shoved in for years.

...And then inside an actual duty, they are borderline-incompetent and can't handle even basic gameplay that is standard and agreed upon by the game, its community, and even its directors and designers.

Like... if you want me to think Thancred is SO COOOOOOOOL then, as a gameplay-oriented player, you could convince me of that best by just having him actually Tank a dungeon confidently and properly... rather than forcing me to pull for him, and losing his mind if I try to do something like pull up to the Demon Wall clones in Mt. Gulg.

Sorry, this was a bit of a digression, but I've got to be honest, the performance of Trusts goes a long way to undermining my ability to take the characters seriously.
