The list of addons you can use and still have a 0% chance of repercussions from SE is a nice round number, if you catch my meaning..

Any addon that you choose to use despite being told they are ALL against ToS carries some inherent chance of risk. Depending on what addon you're using and how it does or doesn't directly interact with the game files (and therefore make itself detectable to any SE surveillance that they currently use or may implement in the future), that risk may be more or less. Depending how private or public you are about your use of the addon, that risk is again either more or less. You can even apply this thinking to all of the (in my opinion) obvious non-FFXIV programs that wouldn't ever be a problem (Discord, Windows, Excel, etc.) but that people are using hyperbole to freak out about right now, if you really must.

People streaming in real time with their addons enabled and viewable on the screen after being told many times, over many years, and even in the ToS they agree to when they sign up for the game that THIS IS NOT ALLOWED are tempting fate. Would you break a law while a cop was standing 5 feet away, watching you do it in real time with their own eyes? Probably not. Same thing here.

This situation is more like, there's a dirt road you've always broke the speed limit on for years, nobody lives on the road and this action endangers nobody, but then one day the National Guard is sitting there watching the road and they shoot your car with a tank.

It's ALSO something that you could easily run on a laptop, tablet, or phone right next to you. It's not like console players are somehow locked from using Discord.

It also ISN'T a third party tool since if doesn't interact with the game or its files at all.

I realize that these people would still find something to be dumb about, but a simple and easy "A third party tool is something that interacts with the game or its files." would clean out these disingenuous people bringing up ridiculous things like web browsers and Discord.

Technically speaking Cactbot and similar don't need to interact with the game either. Since the timelines for fights in this game are so strict, you could just whip up a program where you start a timer when you pull, then at T + 1:15 it says like "Stack for so-and-so" no interaction needed.

In a lot of cases, yeah, but for example, WOL EX he can do 4 phases in any order so you couldn't just have like a bot playing a .mp3, hence why catbot is controversial because it reads the memory. I don't have a hatred catbot like some people because I think it can be used as audio description for people who need it. However, some of the calls it can make are a bit over the line.

There is no grey area in use of things whenever it get to it, but it is ok... if they are tired of people parsing, they can just terminate the combat log entirely, you may see numbers on the screen but they are not recorded to anything kind of thing.

And I personally think that would be a good thing, as it could raise the bar of players to actually use the combat dummies that determine, if you can reach the amount of damage needed personally to be able to clear whatever content.

Sure, it could. But it does, so it's a third party tool.

You could just play a video of someone who completed the fight and listen out for call outs too.

those dummies are kinda whack since they don't account for party buffs and can be extremely hard to clear on some jobs, even if you have a good understanding of the job.

IDK, that'd be a really good day to experiment with what it felt like to try not speeding, to me, if I saw that, but that's just me ;-p
