The part that matters is him saying any game with NFT's would have to be built around it. Which is helpful for two reasons.

1) Rules out XIV.

2) Any game built around NFTS will crash and burn on its own. Which will be a nice punch in the mouth for Square getting greedy

It's easy to say this but all of the game companies are starting to show interest in NFTs, not just SE. It's going to get to a point where you'd have to stop playing video games altogether to avoid NFTs at the accelerated rate companies are showing interest in them.

No matter now I look at it NFs are just a scam.

To use NFTs the game would have to be removed from Steam.

That woul be the only positive thing about NFTs (for people who want to but are not allowed to switch to PC version).

Eh not really, if you have play game in general often enough you get used to the boom-burst cycle or quick money scheme companies try to do that would all but spell "certain doom" for certain thing. For example:

- The MMO boom (around the peak success era of WoW): SP day would be numbered, no company would invest in SP with how much money to be made in MMO. So everyone and their mother brother sister jumped in, majority got burned, some fought tooth and nail for scrap, so many went out of business or bought up after failure. And these days? Single Players game is as numerious and as strong as it have ever were.

- The console boom (around the peak of the console war era): that's it, no one gonna make game for PC now. Easier to make game for console, less worry about piracy, no company would even make PC game any more. Turn out, you just need the right delivery model (Steam) and PC continue to be the master race these day.


Point is, companies are for profit entity. The best you can hope for is they can make money while also making you happy, but if anyone who think company should focus on making you happy at their own cost need to be more realistic. But that's all they can do: they can try, but it's not them who decide the outcome.


Personally I keep an open mind, I honestly don't care much about NFT. If it comes here and find success, that means the market as a whole accept it, it means it brings a net positive to the medium. On the other hand, if it's as bad as people claim then I have nothing to worry about, 'cause that'll be just another scheme that would crash and burn.

In its current state, I don't see how NFTs would work with video games, but who knws what would happen in the future.

The main way I can see Square using them working so far is kind of like a virtual amiibo. The NFT itself has no interaction with the game, but it interacts with a purpose built tool that gives you benefits in the game.

E.g. "Rare Tier Nomura Artwork NFT! Buy one of this collection of 100 and get exclusive emotes/mounts/glamour for XIV and a new summoning materia for FF7R!"

The least labour intensive way of integrating NFTs with video games is just to not bother, and just set up marketplaces for them that the company can take a heavy cut of when people engage in speculation. Then to use them as keys to gatekeep extra content.

Sorry for not reading the thread but here is my entirely possible to be wrong interpretation of what I heard.

"My president said he's interested, saying we're never going to do them or not touch them may impact SE's investors actions and that's just not helpful.. best I can say is they wont be in FFXIV and try to give a reason for that, while also not scaring away the money - may interest you to know that I want to keep FFXIV going for 10 more years too!"

But I could be drinking the Kool-Aid lol, and it's still worth noting President was like YEEEE NFFFTTSS BOIISSSS.

My opinion on the matter is it's silly to purposefully maintain a permanent scarcity because it's a digital world and we can all easily be 'wealthy' in that aspect. A place where sharing and resources are extremely powerful to then introduce a system that purposefully and permanently(?) nerfs that is a bit like "ah man, we're going back in human development-- yay for money being our god". I am one who thinks temporary scarcities are fine because humans are funny, but never permanent as long as means to do so are there - I'm not really interested in the games of haves and haves nots.

Though I also understand that as someone who is in a position of management you don't want to ..not.. make money because your responsible for their livelihood so I don't want to make it seem like it's hyper easy for someone who might be thinking "I can hire more people, I can pay people even more, this isn't too bad". Maybe like trying to put the one ring on and use it for good lol.

Of course the whole industry is interested into transforming every player into sweatshop workers for their own interests through digital currency that have no inherent value. What do you mean ? He's already overworking his team and checking everything they do every 15 to 30 minutes slices and they can't catch a break. If he could do that with every player, he would, like all the gaming industry. Sadly.

At least with horse armor I can put it on my horse and ride around on it.

Also any hope I had for NFTs died when people tried profiting off selling NFTs of dead people without permission or consent.
