    I just want to know where we stand. I'd rather be told "no" than be drip-fed and strung along.

    If I'm not mistaken, I've heard that it's pretty common for Japanese people to not out right say "no" but instead go with a "maybe". Eventhough they would mean "no".
    And if that's so I'm not surprised that for westerner not hearing a straight out "no" gives them hopes instead.
