You've hit the nail on the head right here. FFXIV is a Cooperative RPG on a large scale. It's not an MMORPG in the way the genre was defined and as the term's been used in the past. Yes, there are a lot of people playing, and we often group for dungeons and side content like maps, but it's no Everquest, Asheron's Call, FFXI, or even Vanilla WoW where a significant amount of multiplayer activity is required outside of the main story.

All MMORPG ever meant is "Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game" - that's all that means and has ever meant.

Thousands of players playing on the same shard over multiple shards: That fulfills the first requirement of Massively Multiplayer and Online.
Is a role-playing game. Fulfills the second requirement.

Whatever else people assume is necessary for a game to be an MMORPG just isn't. PvP? Not at all a requirement.

There is no requirement for an MMORPG to be competitive in any shape or form, and FFXIV has proven that by becoming the best (at the very least the most popular) MMORPG available.
