this can actually already be done with item codes. item codes you can also gift people if you so choose. item codes that can be limited for that sweet FOMO dopamine.
why would nfts be worth the investment if we already have technology that does the exact same thing?
Why not just take a screenshot? Ask a digital artist how they feel about someone just screenshotting their work. Ownership matters. Nobody cares that you screenshotted something. If I develop a digital art piece you could for sure just come along and right click save, but so what? if I NFT my digital art It can be verified that this is indeed my original and future purchasers know they are buying the original.

About item codes: Item codes are just randomly generated codes from a central database (so no ownership and risk or closure). They are not unique and are frequently one time use items so user creation and trading are out. Also, they have no set standard in creation or format so implementation across games would be extremely difficult.

You say this as if art theft isn't prominent in the NFT community. People with baseless receipts of ownership, who do not in fact own anything, legally.

None of this is about art, it's about making money quickly before the speculatory investments stop.

Good thing I am a digital artist and can tell you how I feel about it.
It sucks. People screenshotting/saving the images and using them as motives for tshirts/cups/bags and other merch sucks. Seeing people show up with your work in their portfolio during a job interview is a frustrating process.
And it won't go away unless we have better and modern copyright laws. And stores who accept random images who actually give a shit about copyrights.

But and here is the kicker. NFTs don't solve that. You have the same thing going on with NFTs. People stealing/screenshotting/saving art and make an NFT ouf ot that and then sell that for whatever amount of money.

    Edit:

And again NFTs here don't make the process easier. Additionally random item implementation across different franchises makes almost zero sense. Except for specific events. Because it places a burden on the developer for having to manually remake/alter/adding whatever item you add because of the differences in game engines / art style / proportions / rigging etc.
Secondly you already need to have an account with almost every major game publisher when playing their games. There is nothing stopping them from sending a checkmark to their own servers when playing game X to mark you down as owning item X Y and Z. And then give you a similar item or something else in a different game of theirs.

You are right. NFT's do not solve digital art theft. However, before NFT's it was impossible to sell your digital art and create a market for it as the purchaser had no idea if they were buying the original or a screenshot. I have friends in that community that are making a living now through NFT's. It's not perfect but at least it's some progress.

Big wrong. Even if you know what nfts are you have no idea what the digital art community has been for the past 20 years.

2 of my closest friends are digital artists (one full time, one part). They did create a market for their work prior to NFT's but it was not a large one. They had to use closed forums for their work and do work based off commission. Nowadays things are much easier for them. They have their supporters go to their page and see their list of NFT's and they list them on various marketplaces. Their lives have improved dramatically.

Prior to NFT's the full time artist was struggling. He put in a lot of work for very little return. He was mostly selling to small community of fans. He is by no ways rich now but he is stable and able to reach many more people. There is an actual market for his work now.

the purchaser had no idea if they were buying the original or a screenshot.
NFTs do not solve that problem whatsoever either.

It's not perfect but at least it's some progress.
Applying concepts of materiality to digital items is not progress. It is, quite literally, a regressive concept. "We do not know how to adequately monetize these for content providers so let's pretend like an infinitely replicable digital good is actually pretend scarce" is the opposite of progress.
