I've learned, from my own experience, therapy and what my friends have told me, that the best way to get over anxiety is to expose yourself to the things that make you anxious until you realize that there's nothing to be anxious about, that once you conquer that fear, it cannot inhibit you anymore
so I disagree, sarcastic remarks like grow up and whatnot can be helpful because you cannot always run from your demons, sometimes you have to face and fight them
I say this was someone who used to have severe social anxiety, who was worried about what people will think about me, what I wear, how I behave and so on until my therapist went to the city with me and made me ask people stupid or obvious things - or directions for places I'm standing right next to
that sole day pretty much eradicated my social anxiety, because it hammered down that 99,9% of people do not care, even if you're being stupid on purpose like me, even 'help' you nicely
