America is typically only used to refer to the USA, whereas "The Americas" is used to refer to the North, South, and Central American landmass, and a select few islands off the coasts. It's like how you wouldn't call Africa the "Central African Republic" despite there being a country within Africa called the "Central African Republic," and the names being similar to each other as they contain the word "Africa" in them.
