It's not just "Americans claiming the term" – I'm from Australia and I've always been told "America" as a stand-alone term means the USA.
As a Mexican I'm laughing so hard at the controversy, c'mon it was not that hard to get what OP meant, and doesn't matter if you (somebody living in The Americas) identify as a person from The Americas or not, that's irrelevant, the only true is the name of this continent is The Americas (north and south for more diversity) or "El Continente Americano" as taught as far back as in kindergarten, wherever we like it or not
I don't know, seems like mistaking indifference for hostility. Not caring and being unwilling to engage is quite different from hate.
Why put a slash between two entirely different things?
Alternatively:_______________Is Canada considered part of the US? No.
Is Canada considered part of North America? Yes.
On the larger topic, though, "North America" and "Central and South America" or "Latin America" and "America (Other)" (not quite the same delineation, but both still at least as useful as the Europe/Asia delineation as one approaches their border) seem a plenty worthwhile distinction.

Is Mexico considered part of the US/North America? No, it's its own country between North and South America. It's not even part of Central America.

Is South America part of the US/North America? No, it's its own continent that is a part of the "Americas" but they do not recognize themselves as the general "American" that the US does (hence why Brazilian, Chilean, etc. exists):

It really isn't hard to Google. Just because it's all a giant landmass does not mean everyone there recognizes themselves as American lmao.
