It is less expensive (and more profitable) for SE to come out with another in its series of mobile games, as that division made 33+ billion Yen last quarter. All of the MMOs combined made less than 12 billion Yen last quarter.

Classic and retail WoW are, basically, the same game, with a launcher that works well with both, and an accounting/subscription service that was never separate.

FF11 and FF14 are not the same game, and subscriptions are not provided by the same service.

Moving from Playonline to the FFXIV launcher (and the different account managers) would be a massive and disruptive undertaking with unknown reward.

Not likely gonna happen, but it would definitely be a way to get people to possibly try out FF XI.

I didn't play it much, and from what little I did experience it was certainly an interesting game. Though not something I would go out of my way to sub separately for...

Of course it would but I think they respect the diehard people who still plays it and join the game. Especially when 20 year anniversary is just around the corner.

Been a while, would love to log in and see how far I would get now with my PUP/BLU but doubt even Kujata exists anymore, probably got merged with Midg or Leviathan.

So... a fun thought to think if they did do it.
Many years ago at this point but yes.

FFXI has a certain charm, but it is a pain to log into Playonline. One could maximize the graphics, but that used to require a bit of Internet-fu and then hand-editing the configuration file. At a guess, the play is better on console than on PC, I found the menu system a bit underwheliming on PC.

Initial storyline was a good introduction. Most of the gameplay has to be looked up to understand it. (Or, maybe, one has to be used to much earlier FF games in order to be comfortable with the UI).

The major problem I had when playing it after first playing a number of other MMOs (WoW, LoTR, SW:TOR, RIFT, etc) was ... well, it was boring and exceedingly grindy. Now, realize, I used to have to hunt for Zhevra hoofs on about a dozen leveling Horde characters in WoW, so I understand grind. I'm not a big fan.

Those quintessential memories from your first MMO can never be replicated, and I understand fully why people look on FFXI with fondness. I started playing non-graphic versions of MMOs back in the mid-80s, and still look fondly on Scepter of Goth, which ran on an IBM XT system with up to 16 players.

Maybe a discount for those that have a active subscription with FFXIV.

What are your guys opinion on the matter? For it, against it or just don't care? Also, how likely or unlikely do you believe the chances are of this happening in the future?

Edit: Or as Skivvy suggested maybe even a combination deal on the subscription. Such as subscribing to both on one sub for an extra few dollars a month.
I'm not interested in FFXI but have no objection to them doing it if they want to as long as it wouldn't affect the subscription price of this game.

I don't see it happening, though. FFXIV seems to be on very solid ground and FFXI seems to have enough people willing to continue to pay the separate subscription that SE has no incentive to combine them.

Blizzard made Classic a shared subscription with retail to mask the state of retail engagement to investors and they made that decision before Classic was even launched. They didn't make the change retroactively.

So are WoW and WoW Classic. The 2 games share almost nothing in common other than some class, NPC and location names (just like FFXIV shares job, NPC and location names with other FF titles).

Apparently, they used to do that from what I've heard here. I would appreciate if at the very least they brought the discount.

As someone who played xi from 2005 to just after ARR release and then here and there once and awhile after I can say that nope, there was never a discount for subbing to both.

The accounts for the two were not even joined together at first, that merger came about half way through v1 iirc.
