I wish we had a shared subscription

    Hi everyone,

I really wished FFXIV and FFXI had a shared subscription in the way WoW Retail/Classic works. I play FFXIV a ton, but I always feel nostalgic for FFXI. The problem is I don't miss it enough to pay for a second subscription on top of mine for FFXIV.

What are your guys opinion on the matter? For it, against it or just don't care? Also, how likely or unlikely do you believe the chances are of this happening in the future?

Edit: Or as Skivvy suggested maybe even a combination deal on the subscription. Such as subscribing to both on one sub for an extra few dollars a month.

They are two different games, there is no chance at all of this happening.

I am aware they are two separate games. However, they are both under the same company and are the only FF MMO titles. I find it unlikely to happen, but I wouldn't rule it completely out.

Final Fantasy is an extremely big brand though with many, many different games. not only that if they did shared subscription they would lose money. This is very different from WoW Retail/Classic since Classic is just a Vanilla version to Retail. FFXIV and FFXI are vastly different the only things that are the same is that they share characteristics of what all Final Fantasy games have to make it a Final Fantasy. There are players of FFXIV that are not interested in FFXI and vice versa. If there was a shared subscription I would feel forced to play FFXI just to get my money's worth since half of my sub is paying for that as well.

In the end Square won't do it it's much more profitable to have separate subs.

I've never touched WoW, so maybe I'm missing something as to how they handle their combo pricing, but the above statement hit me a bit weird. In my mind, I'm assuming both games would keep their current pricing (I believe both are around $12/$13 for standard), and then they would offer a combo deal for like...$18 or something. Why would you feel the need to pay for the higher combo price when you have absolutely no interest in one of the games?

Again, maybe WoW does it totally different and that's the angle you're working with, but not sure :X

It's not bundled pricing - when you pay your sub, you're paying for access to both WoW Classic and Retail WoW. Full stop, you just pay $15/mo. So essentially regardless of whether you want to or not, you're paying for WoW Classic AND Retail. Which is what wishing we had a shared sub like WoW Retail/Classic would entail - whether you want to or not, you're paying for both FFXI and FFXIV if you went that route.

I don't know how WoW even entered this conversation. They don't have combo pricing. In WoW, you subscribe to their game, and the subscription gives you access to the Classic versions of the game as well as Shadowlands. There is no "combo pricing." FFXIV doesn't have the equivalent of a "Classic" server, so the paradigm doesn't even apply. It would be nice to have a "Square MMO Pass" that gives access to all Square Enix MMOs. I personally wouldn't get it, but I could see how it would appeal to some players.

Honestly, it's poor marketing on Square-Enix's part NOT to have some kind of bundle. I doubt there's any risk of one cannibalizing the other's market, but I'm sure a lot of players would be pretty happy to pay for both at some kind of discount.

That said, I think they would probably need to get FF11 on modern consoles to make much of a splash. And that might mean having to invest in a higher-resolution UI, at the very least.

Still, having just bought FF11 recently, it's such a wildly different game than FF14, it winds up making me appreciate both more. And if the recent exodus from WoW has shown us anything, one of the big selling-points of FFXIV is that for newcomers, there are YEARS worth of content to work your way through! By making FF11 relevant again, and with a compelling enough savings (or trial period), I could see FF11 getting an influx of players too, whenever people are waiting between FF14's content.

I'm not interested in FFXI but have no objection to them doing it if they want to as long as it wouldn't affect the subscription price of this game.

I don't see it happening, though. FFXIV seems to be on very solid ground and FFXI seems to have enough people willing to continue to pay the separate subscription that SE has no incentive to combine them.

Blizzard made Classic a shared subscription with retail to mask the state of retail engagement to investors and they made that decision before Classic was even launched. They didn't make the change retroactively.

So are WoW and WoW Classic. The 2 games share almost nothing in common other than some class, NPC and location names (just like FFXIV shares job, NPC and location names with other FF titles).

I would love this. I do resub to XI every now and then, but I'd keep a far more active sub in XI if it were combined. My sub in XI is actually more than twice as much as I pay in XIV (I do add a couple of mules + storage options). They could suck some extra dollars from me with a combo deal :3
