Well according to this thread, 95% of the community, as well as a massive team of successful MMO developers just don't get it man. It must be proper big brain stuff this PvP business.

Sort of i guess. Classes in PvP are normally designed in a way, where they have a good amount in variety with their skills such as "deals x amount of dmg and slows target for y% and z sec", knockback effects, AoE in alot of variety, status ailments and so on, all depending on the playstyle and design of said class. Those kind of things, are the lifeblood of PvP combat that gives it its flavour and allow even classes such as healers, a chance to put up a good fight, despite damage not being their primary focus.
FFXIV combat does not have that focus. Most abilities in PvP here are just raw damaging abilities with different potencies, PvE utility and WAY too few abilities in general. The approach of all Jobs not being gear-dependent is a good one, but all of the stats, as well as performances should not be role dependent, but made individually. A Ninja is a Ninja first, not Melee Dps #3.
PvP is a thing that has been that way since the early MMOs of early 2000 and this game isn't going to reinvent the wheel here with its MOBA-like apporoach. It is still a MMORPG and if it wants to have proper PvP and stay competitive with other MMOs out there, they better step up their game.

I agree with this.Problem is this whole discussion is not "expression of disagreements" it's just making up buzzwords to push your hidden agenda. Both of the groups argue in a very weird way for or against wopvp, it's not even arguing it's just self reassuring justification they make themselves to protect their world view.
The first group is clearly scared of the challenge wopvp would bring (be it social or whatever) but this challenge is not real it's manufactured by their own fear of whatever scary movie they made for themselves. So they throw away buzzwords like "griefing" (which isn't real if for example you yourself "turn pvp on", just don't turn it on, just an example) "toxicity" just to push this scary movie they created. But this movie is still very detached from reality. And even if it wasn't detached from reality the thing that will have final say in this is the data on pvp activity not some movie someone produced inside their head.
The other group for some reason needs to justify that killing others is fun. Which is just fact. Challenging other players is fun. Completely destroying lower level player is fun. It's why people smurf in very competitive games. You shouldn't have to argue for this it's a fact. It's how human lizard brain works. Arguing for it or against it makes zero sense.
When the game's story becomes self-aware:
The MMORPG market is not a zero-sum game. Each company that produces an MMO does not have to throw every feature from every other beloved MMO into their game to be successful.
There's a reason so many players in the forum are looking forward to Amazon's New World. It's something New, holding the Hopes of Players for the One True MMORPG. Perhaps, because it's an Amazon game, it'll beat out all the other MMORPGs and become the most popular. More power to them.
Personally, the aesthetic of the game, as seen in videos, is more Dark Souls and less Kingdom Hearts. I prefer the latter, although I'll tolerate a Dark Souls vibe. I won't be playing it without some more solid reasons than "it has better PvP", though.
Honestly this is how Ashes sounds to me. With them saying they want to take aspects from both sandbox mmo’s and theme park mmo’s and mix the aspects from each one that people like instead of heavily leaning on one or the other, this way they appeal to more people. There’s a diverse class system and huge open zones filled with plenty of things. I’m hoping it’s the one true mmo :x Graphics look really nice and the races do as well.
Hope they treat their players better than they treat their employees.
it would be a great addition for a small subset of players.Look, I like the concept of Graveyard Keeper (now with reaper being added) as much as the next person, but, as I don't craft, I doubt I will see much use in that kind of content in this game. Frankly, I doubt I will even touch it. Now with the inclusion of male viera, there looks to be quite a bit of casual oriented things being added to the game. I just don't see the problem with PvPers getting a bit more of a focus for once.
Open world PvP would be a great addition for players, I really don't see any drawbacks here. Just fun.
and fun for you, as you have said, but as many have also said, not fun for them. If pvp had always had a focus, it would not be such a tough sell, but the hard truth is, it has never been a development focus, ever.
Smells like alot of y'all have cowardice in your hearts.
World PVP dont make much sense in XIV, since harassment is taken so serious by the ToS, why would they implement a system where the focus is literally harass other players while they do dailies and MSQ? I mean i've never seen someone engage in combat in Open World PVP on WoW at least where the chances for both sides winning were even. its aways a gank where you have 100% chance of winning or not engaging at all. Its basically bullying someone clearly weaker than you.
