Why's the WoL Changing to Paladin?

Besides the obvious FFIV parallels with Cecil going DRK to PLD and ending up on the Moon, I recall around the time EW was announced Yoshi explained the reason why Derplander is PLD as his 'poster Job' for the expansion, and that it was to give the idea of a knight in shining armour as a beacon of hope when all hope seems lost in the apocalyptic scenario that EW's storyline is.

Basically, by using PLD to symbolize the expansion SE are reverting to the 'Warrior of Light' concept literally, and upholding the image of Hydaelyn's champion as not just the champion and defender of the Mothercrystal, but of the world itself, a beacon that the world can rally behind and fight back against that insane nhilist Ascian and the WoL's crazy Garlean stalker-with-a-crush.

I lack a citation for that, but I'm pretty sure that was said (please clarify or debunk that with citations by all means though!).

- Sage as a job (although visually it's nothing like Tellah)

I wonder if there's gonna be twins (temporarily?) sacrificing themselves for the WoL's survival too.

it has to do with the original CGI trailer, i think.

The main protag for FFXIV in the CGI has had a long journey of trials and error but ultimately they've never really properly worn a shield to protect themselves. from then on they've been playing tank jobs, mostly. He leveled up a few other jobs like Dragoon, Monk, and Samurai but he's been a Marauder main for years. So they then decided to try and branch out to a new tank job like Dark Knight but that didn't last because they most likely only picked it due to the Light being the enemy that time around an based on what we've seen of them in the cgi's DKs "dark and brooding" thing just doesn't vibe with them. so they most likely went with Paladin afterwards since it's basically the opposite to DKs, which personally to me makes sense since if you watch the 2.0 CGIs in order it fits this narrative quite well:

if you ask me what his next job is most likely going to be, i'll say a Gunbreaker since it's the next logical step imo.

Not quite. A detail frequently not spotted in 1.0's opening movie is Derplander was actually a GLA from the begininng and is only switched to ARC during the Echo scene - when he returns back to the 'present' in the Adventurer's Guild, a sword can be seen dangling from his backpack, and this is confirmed by propaganda artwork for 1.0 featuring him as GLA wielding a sword (it even featured on the cover for 1.0), and SE even took that a step further by making up a full size replica of his armour and sword as a display at SE HQ. And now he's come full circle becoming GLA's natural progression; PLD. It makes perfect sense.

This. There's the FF IV symbolism, the general marketability of tanks and melee, and paladin being the shining knight/symbol of hope (wish we'd gotten to actually be that in our actual PLD quests at some point...) in the trying times of the apocalypse.

It's likely just a light reference to FFIV. I'm not reading too much into it since the previous job choices for the Warrior of Light haven't really amounted to too much other than 'rule of cool'. We also haven't seen the second half of the expansion trailer yet, so it could very well be that the Warrior of Light picks up a different job.
