I would argue I always saw Shinryu as a case of Zenos had no clue how to handle his new found power which caused his loss and him not being able to pull out all Shinryu probably could without Zenos controlling it. Given even at the end of Ala Mhigo he seemed almost no worse for wear after fighting him there it is really the only logical thing I could figure. I always joke "Zenos really nerfed Shinryu and himself in doing that."

I can buy that as far as 'Zenos wanted a proper fight which is why he didn't fly into the sky and nuke us from orbit' but seems like a stretch to say that Zenos didn't know what he was doing with the form. There was really no indication that he was struggling in that fight or flailing about not knowing what he was doing.

Yeah, he had absolute control over what was essentially hate given form. Not surprising in the slightest though. It's like when blank was able to punk blank near the end of FMA:B. Also how to spoiler?

I mean our character doesn't seem to struggle much either and we are constantly learning new things about our powers. I don't think he wouldn't have indicated he was struggling at all, just that I don't think he was fully aware of what he could do with the Resonant. (As I recall Fordola oddly seemed much more skilled with it in her ability to foresee attacks and both of theirs are based on Krile's echo for example.)
