Considering FFXI is still going "strong", I don't doubt XIV will get more updates even when it goes into maintenance only mode. It may even get graphical updates and the missing genders (provided they're not introduced in another expansion) if it's still deemed popular enough to undertake that challenge.

IIRC, the PS4 is already above their minimum requirements so it's not holding the game back, anyway (although some content DOES push it to its limits, and if 6.0 areas are larger than 5.0... yikes). That said, if the PS5 is enticing enough for technical updates, it may also be enticing enough for more updates.

Indeed, it's not the PS4 holding it back, rather it's the gruntwork they'd have to undertake to create the high res assets.
