i cursed in the in-game chat in the very incident i was mentioning. this idea that if the GMs see a bad word they'll instaban is ludicrous, and is perpetuated by people who want to get away with being jerks

Perpetuated by whom? If someone is warning against usage of certain words, you'd think they aren't using them themselves. Whether they want to or not changes nothing. "Jerk" is a very strong word, when it comes to this game's community. Someone you may consider "a jerk", I may not consider. Vice versa.

the idea that GMs are issuing bans for things that aren't reasonably bannable is perpetuated by people who were absolutely being jerks or harassing in game, by leaving out context and saying that their ban was for "saying a bad word" instead of, say, "following someone around spamming say chat with a word they asked them not to use"

I think you are assuming a lot of things here. I know for a fact SE has banned for what I would personally consider nonsense before, why not do it again? Why not in-game? I'll take the better safe than sorry approach. Not chat at all. When it comes to the case of this OP, they definitely should never chat in-game, in my opinion.the idea that GMs are issuing bans for things that aren't reasonably bannable is perpetuated by people who were absolutely being jerks or harassing in game, by leaving out context and saying that their ban was for "saying a bad word" instead of, say, "following someone around spamming say chat with a word they asked them not to use"
I'll add for the OP, also if you are going to say anything, even 'PG' rated, don't make it accusatory. You may get hit with a "slander" ban. Take my advice, use words like "I think", "supposedly", "assume", "my opinion" etc. A direct accusation will probably lead you to a ban as well.

I'd like to provide some semblance in your defense considering that GM's are indeed considerate in this, especially since I should've gotten a permaban and the GM in this instance decided to argue my case against the GM team. But this was an exception case, and I know I never harass anyone since that's not who I am. Who I am is someone that makes lame innuendos in public chat that might catch people in the wrong way, or give someone that hates me the key to finally unalive me from the game entirely.the idea that GMs are issuing bans for things that aren't reasonably bannable is perpetuated by people who were absolutely being jerks or harassing in game, by leaving out context and saying that their ban was for "saying a bad word" instead of, say, "following someone around spamming say chat with a word they asked them not to use"
I get what you mean, I'm very much in the same boat, which is why I'm trying to push for this change. FFXIV is a very social game and I'd like to enjoy it that way. It's just a minefield right now as it is.I'll add for the OP, also if you are going to say anything, even 'PG' rated, don't make it accusatory. You may get hit with a "slander" ban. I do agree that context is important here, but I also feel in general, strikes should degrade off accounts after a certain amount of time has passed without any other infractions.
It's pretty terrible that someone could get a strike for emote spam that's treated equally as terrible as someone stalking or being abusive to another player, and the former should fall off after a period of time, like say, 6 or 12 months.
I think a (at best) three strikes and you're done policy is pretty severe when there's no degradation of offenses over a period of time. You could've done something minor (but actionable, to be wholly fair) 5 years ago and if you mess up a second time, it's up to a GM's mood if they feel like you deserve to be scaled up to a second ban or permabanned.
The fact that years can pass between potential infractions and are still treated like they happened yesterday feels a bit extreme to me.

Players who get reported for verbal harassment should be muted not permamently banned... if i said something that was offensive mute me and chat ban me but why deny from playing the game that i am paying for ? i didnt do anything wrong in the game... i might have said something that was offensive minorly to someone specific but that deserves a chat ban or suspension ... but NOT A GAME BAN FOR LIFE... GMS and admins please read that^^^ and all of this thread

If someone gets banned for life, chances are they did something pretty bad. Probably multiple times.Players who get reported for verbal harassment should be muted not permamently banned... if i said something that was offensive mute me and chat ban me but why deny from playing the game that i am paying for ? i didnt do anything wrong in the game... i might have said something that was offensive minorly to someone specific but that deserves a chat ban or suspension ... but NOT A GAME BAN FOR LIFE...
