You're also assuming the inclusion of darker skin characters could only ever possibly be to pander or virtue signal. Why? Why can't they just be characters that happen to have dark skin?

He definitely quacked like a duck. It's ok theodric, you can come out and express your real feelings about those different from you; you'd actually garner a sliver of some sort of trust or respect.

I'd have no issue with that if it wasn't done because they were pressured to do so and the characters were written for their character rather than skin color.

You don't have to have an issue with it, square enix is a multi million dollar company, they have a high level operations process which ensures artistic integrity isn't broken or handled inappropriately. You don't have to worry by the way, to you skin color means nothing, so there's nothing to worry about if they add multiple dark skin characters in the future.

You seem to be twisting my opinion into the opposite of what I'm meaning.

To be clear, I have no objection to a variety of races in the game and I don't know why you are thinking that I'm objecting to them being added. I just don't like the reason being "for marketing" as opposed to storytelling, whether that marketing is targeted at me, you, or whoever.

It's not an either/or choice, marketing benefits as well as those who it appeals to and the game itself. You seem to be narrowly making it a 1 track "purpose."

Why shouldn't I like a character just as much as you do, just because they physically resemble you?
