I feel like much of the reason for the WoL being so...inactive during heated moments like that is because they didn't want to bother having to adjust the scenes to be appropriate for every single job which is why when you do actually do anything it's generally when we have some plot device handy or are using our Echo which aren't tied to any job in particular.
I guess its probably the reason (yet they still did that Lyse scene where I flew towards her ready to smack her with my books
) but it sadly does not take away from my frustration. Why not simply keep Mikoto at her side with the blade still at her throat? There great danger and realistically she would be faster then us. Or have them be surrounded by snipers that will hit them all if dont do what she wants. They could do stuff where it makes a bit of a sense. And really the rest of the story was interesting. I liked the different points of views and I absolutely loved that we got some notes on the characters (pleeeeeease SE adds these for every single old dungeon too..even with RNG droprate...I would farm them in a heartbeat)
But this finale just really brought me out of it...because now these other characters might (or might not) be forever lost.
Honestly when I watched Ethys stream today he also brought up something: How its really changing what a weapon can do or not. Why are we afraid of a gun if later the traitor is shot and seemingly quite fine? Or how seemingly no name NPC will often get cut down by one sword swipe no matter the gear but Mikoto getting hit by that slash only meant that she lay there and a bit later was seemingly quite fine...They really can just switch around what damage a weapon does...and his cutscene where Mikoto got captured was even more funny..because he was there as a machinist. So it would have all come down to who shots faster. Later when the traitor was shot someone just posted in his chat "so now people can shot again".

Yeah sadly it wont be ever fixed but either they then have to plan around this by having the enemies plan it so that we simply cant react or give the WoL an action that is their action and does not depend on the job. A simple shield for example that they learned after Haurchefants death so that nobody ever takes hits for them. (As a story explanation on why we have learned it) Heck they already have the animation for this seeing how we suddenly started to cast the anti-tempering shields. (If I remember it correctly we could just do that against Lakshmi) Heck somewhere in ARR I think we got a certain dagger which we had to infuse with Materia. For fighting scenes in cutscenes you could use that. I mean our character is an adventurer, they should know some combat other than their current weapon. Giving us those kinds of items or attacks would then make it much easier to let the WoL be active..and not let them stand there as if they hadnt just defeated certains Ascians a few weeks earlier..
