Not to derail or anything but that's technically not true and there's more evidence against it than for it, to use an example all our ape relatives and most mammals have straight hair, curly hair is a mutation and likely one that occurred somewhat early on in our evolution. Further curly/woolly hair is something seen in other mammals as a mutation, even birds for example can have curled feathers, the likely answer is that curly hair is a mutation that occasionally develops and is bolstered by environmental factors where having that hair is advantageous. Whether it be a natural form of sunblock or better insulation or whatever, hence why Woolly Rhinos and Mammoths (ice age species) had it, it's also likely why some body hair is naturally curly as in all environments it provides an insulating element for more sensitive areas more susceptible to heat loss.

The groin, armpits, and neck/jaw are prime heat vents for our bodies and the genitals in particular can be very sensitive to temperature shifts which actually can and do interfere with procreation.

To put it more optimistically there is no 'natural' hair type, both curly and straight hair are hardcoded in the human race... just objectively one came after the other.
