The game was rewritten from the ground up when ffxiv 2.0 launched. Stop with the spaghetti code garbage. They won't be ending FFXIV any time soon.
Though, most likely the reason for it ending will be due to how annoying it'll get having to work with the spaghetti code and all the limitations it imposes on the devs.
Even then, it'll probably continue on in a sort of maintenance mode, so long as people will play it.
As for a new FF MMO, be it XIV-2 or otherwise... That will depend entirely on whether SE deems it potentially lucrative enough to sink the vast amounts of money that creating an MMO from scratch requires. Which, given how XIV 1.0 turned out, probably makes them a little more cautious about greenlighting MMO's.
How likely they will consider it is hard to say, but they already run XIV under less than its potential because they want to earn maximum profits off it meaning that the devs have to be really critical about what they spend time and money on developing (Including spending their own free time, as was the case for the few Viera and Hrothgar glasses and stuff). Otherwise, if given free control and a higher portion of its earnings to spend, its possible that they could have a team (Or teams) working on rewriting the code in order to make "XIV-2" without having to completely start the game over from scratch.
Not turned based but instances similar to FFXIV dungeons/raids/trials, focusing all development on that. Use ARPG type of progression (Path of Exile, Diablo, ..) with 1 hub where you'll be refining your gear and stuff and all else will be instanced content to be done in party like FFXIV instances. Do still greatly resemble the holy trinity (tank+healer+dps).
To keep the Final Fantasy flavor, have a deep story purely told with cut scenes, like you have in fighting games (Mortal Combat, ...).
I know this is too much of a niche game to be successful, but I'd play the heck out of that.
The game was rewritten by a completely different team.If anything once ffxi dies off then possible ff17 could be the next MMO. However ffxiv is going super strong. If anything I would like for them to get enough dev support to overhaul the game's graphics and shading and fix alot of things they cant due to the early code from 1.0
The 'limitations' have nothing to do with 1.0 but are there because the code was rewritten poorly. When they 'emulated WoW they also 'emulated' the 2004 code it seems.
The graphics will stay the same as they are but with small improvements because it means that they can give a uniform experience from the console to PC. We dont have addons because Sony dont want player made content running on their platform.
1.0 they made a FF11 HD and the MMO market had changed by then. Players expect a well done FF WoW-clone and that's what we got and it's successful.I've already said it but I will say it again, SE are highly unlikely to invest in developing a new FF MMORPG - the market for new MMOs had already stagnated, and with the global economy in complete meltdown SE simply are not going to take a risky gamble on a long and costly MMORPG development project that is likely to blow up in their face and bring them crashing down in flames, it happened to them once already with FFXIV 1.0, and unlike ARR which turned things around, there would be no possibility of salvaging such a hypothetical game with a reboot this time.
The market is fine. If you notice when they release numbers it's always the (misleading) total accounts made not the concurrent player base - the real one that matters.
I seriously doubt that we have more than a million concurrent players and that is successful! The problem other studios had is that they expected WoW numbers and if they didn't materialise they pulled funding and they died a slow content drought death.
They probably could make a new FF MMO as these ones tend toward the fantasy genre so it's possible to have a future or present based type. It's a lot of work but it's a good stream of income, particularly if you milk the payer base with the Mogstation and extra subs for features the game should have.
Why stop at 100? WoW certainly didn't. There's really no reason to arbitrarily stop at 100. Sure, the game will eventually go into mmaint mode with no new expansions/content. But doing it at level 100 feels really arbitrary. The only reason they'll stop making expansions is when the game isn't financially viable enough to invest in them.
Even if they just decide 'nah this is far enough' there's really no reason to have that specifically be 100 and not say, 110 or 120 etc. Or even 90 if they wrapped up this current overarching plot next expansion.

No it wasn't lol.
It was created based on the 1.0 systems. The devs have literally said that themselves.
It's also the reason why various systems exist in the game, such as how combat functions, how the character creation functions, how inventory functions etc.
Unless you believe it's possible to completely code an entire MMO from scratch in only a single year, which is laughable, when most games are in development for several years before release.
The limitation on the 2.0 are really starting to show and even the devs feel restricted within their work for improvement. (they need to cheat to actually adapt new features into the game (for example the capes)).
Either the game will end like FFXI or they will make a new (MMO)RPG game based on FFXIV without the constrain of the 1.0 IMO
But once again SE is quiet about a new FF title so.. Meh
Eh, just seems like a nice round number to me. But if you consider how long an expansion typically runs, that puts the game another six or seven years out.Why stop at 100? WoW certainly didn't. There's really no reason to arbitrarily stop at 100. Sure, the game will eventually go into mmaint mode with no new expansions/content. But doing it at level 100 feels really arbitrary. And I wouldn't take WoW's eternal refusal to die as a good indication of what to do. WoW's story has gone to total crap over the years.
I don’t think we will ever get a direct sequel to FF14, but I’m also not as sure as others seem to be this game has that much longevity left. Even with the upgrade from PS3 to PS4 the game is still starting to look a little dated and as much as I enjoy it, and definitely am excited where the story is heading, I think we will probably see one or two more main expansions then maybe a mini one to tie up loose ends.
I don’t think the servers are being turned off any time soon or anything like that but they’ll want to build a new MMO to replace this one, like they did with 11, sooner rather than later I think.
