FFXI is still making money for SE though despite it's extreme age - its community is somewhat small but very very dedicated, to the point SE has hinted that in 2022 there will be "something special" connected to the game that SE will announce then for the game's 20th anniversary (the rumour is a new expansion pack, but given SE have officially wound up the game's storyline I doubt it). Either way, FFXI is in no danger of being shut down, not while it still has players dedicated to it (and a small but dedicated development team).

I've already said it but I will say it again, SE are highly unlikely to invest in developing a new FF MMORPG - the market for new MMOs had already stagnated, and with the global economy in complete meltdown SE simply are not going to take a risky gamble on a long and costly MMORPG development project that is likely to blow up in their face and bring them crashing down in flames, it happened to them once already with FFXIV 1.0, and unlike ARR which turned things around, there would be no possibility of salvaging such a hypothetical game with a reboot this time.

The game was rewritten by a completely different team.

The 'limitations' have nothing to do with 1.0 but are there because the code was rewritten poorly. When they 'emulated WoW they also 'emulated' the 2004 code it seems.

The graphics will stay the same as they are but with small improvements because it means that they can give a uniform experience from the console to PC. We dont have addons because Sony dont want player made content running on their platform.

1.0 they made a FF11 HD and the MMO market had changed by then. Players expect a well done FF WoW-clone and that's what we got and it's successful.

The market is fine. If you notice when they release numbers it's always the (misleading) total accounts made not the concurrent player base - the real one that matters.

I seriously doubt that we have more than a million concurrent players and that is successful! The problem other studios had is that they expected WoW numbers and if they didn't materialise they pulled funding and they died a slow content drought death.

They probably could make a new FF MMO as these ones tend toward the fantasy genre so it's possible to have a future or present based type. It's a lot of work but it's a good stream of income, particularly if you milk the payer base with the Mogstation and extra subs for features the game should have.
