You can use this argument to do away with endgame content entirely. And some games do.

Personally, I think there should be "stretch goals", content to really test your mettle, etc. Even if most people don't do it (and they don't), I like games that offer an option to step up your game, challenge yourself, and get the rewards that come with it.
