This may be blunt, but it's bad enough Lalas are adults and people see then as kids, we don't need none gnome races for people to gpose&Jackit to OK?
Oh yeah, I wanna see a MSQ cutscene with a bad guy trying to cut open in half a 12yo kid calling himself the Warrior of Light.
That being said, I sortof understand the desire to play something different, but I completely understand why we can't and shouldn't.
Honestly, this is why I feel like the "ethics issue" is bs. I could see them easily just writing in the race "they appear young forever" or something.
Still hoping the male Viera (if that ever happens) at least allows us to make guys that look naturally effeminate and not like pretty boys. No offense to those going for that look.
Which is probably why SE have been putting them (Lalafells) in positions that you'd normally see adults in. Political leaders, accountants, etc. Lalafells were also created by Tanaka's team because of the Tarutaru in FFXI; as an attempt to get people playing FFXI to easily transition to FFXIV 1.0 (familiar races and all that). The Tarutaru also actually had children, which were actually smaller than the adults (I feel FFXIV should have done the same and not make the supposed children NPC's look exactly the same as the adults).
SE also already have a "forever young" race: the Padjal. They'll never be playable due to lore reasons, though and yes, the lore for them is actually more restrictive than the one for Viera. Padjal are only 'born' from a very specific/rare bloodline/family, if memory serves. Elementals don't just pick a rando peasant kid and go "you kid forever now lmao."
The difference between Lalafells and a "playable child version" of other races is that Lalafells are stylised. They don't actually look like toddlers - they have features that make us think of toddlers, but they don't look like an actual human toddler would if such a model existed in the game.
It may be a subtle distinction, but that might be enough to get a classification review board to agree that Lalafells are not children and the game is not portraying (or allowing users to portray) children in inappropriate ways. It would be harder to make that argument for a race that really look like children.
