Nier is not canon, but Yorha is. Just like FFT/FF12 is not canon, but Ivalice is, or FF3 is not canon, but Crystal Tower is, etc.
That has yet to be seen though. This is Yoko Taro we're dealing with. He would absolutely be the type to make it so, and we wont know until he confirms or denies it.
He's already said that it's canon to Automata, but how that pertains to FFXIV, we won't know for sure until 5.5.
Of course, setting it on the First (which, let's face it, we probably won't be returning to very often once the story there is done) means it probably won't have much for repercussions on the Source, so....
You misunderstand me. Yokai isn't canon. Neir though is as far as I'm aware from what they said.Whether or not it's canon is yet to be seen.
It's a crossover with another franchise, which so far have not been canon outside of their isolated, usually-temporary quests.
But it's also an alliance raid, which so far have been canon to and provided additional information about the wider FFXIV setting (Allag, the Crystal Tower, Mhach, Goug as the predecessors of the Garlean race, more details about how auracite works) as a permanent and integrated part of the wider story. They are part of "the canon version" of what our character has achieved, when referenced by static sources outside of the game such as the lorebook and side stories.
So, is NieR automatically "not canon" because it's a crossover, or is it canon because it's an alliance raid? We don't know yet... and some of us are wary of that.
What has yet to be seen and what won't we know until Yoko Taro confirms it?
He (along with the other guy) may be in charge of making Yorha, but I don't think he's in charge of whether or not Yorha or Nier or both are canon to FFXIV. That said, he (along with the other guy) may be in charge of whether or not Yorha is canon to Nier, and that's up to him (or them).
What other guy? Saito? The Executive Producer for NieR, cause that's who he is.What has yet to be seen and what won't we know until Yoko Taro confirms it?

Yoshi P was the one who contacted them for the collaboration. He knew what he was getting into, and if Yoko Taro says, "This is now canon to NieR" then that means its universe and XIV are intertwined. And this would not be the first time we've had dimension crossing robots causing a ruckus.
You're in for a wild ride in the coming months.

Sure, but only intertwined as far as Nier is concerned (assuming Nier's creator wants it so). As far as FFXIV is concerned, only what's addressed in the Yorha's story has to be canon. The Nier background can be canon or not. It can still be canon, but not necessarily so.
Yes, Yoshida was the one who invited them to collaborate.
My question is what Banri Oda (and the FFXIV story writing team) thinks of this, and what it's doing to his plans for the world-lore...
