My preferred "large" apartment layout.

First upgrade gives you that floor space inside, second upgrade adds the door to the garden balcony area.

Inside is the same floor space as a small, but with the layout reversed and tilted.

Small instanced garden for plants and stuff.

"In-lore" the garden would be on a balcony at the back of the apartment building, to provide an excuse for why you can't see the ward it's built in.

All this is assuming it's fixed of course, ideally it would be nice if you could place the entrance, exit and stairs wherever you wanted.
Because apartments are permanent? It's not difficult to see why people would get upset...
