It serves a purpose that they desire to achieve, therefore it is not unnecessary. However, it remains to be seen whether it will be effective in achieving said purpose without any significant cost.
A lot of crafting jobs have too much unnecessary/redundant/unused abilities, or cross-classing abilities that were made redundant/unneeded by Stormblood (and even more so in ShB).
Tell me - other than when you started, how often do you use certain earlier abilities? I don't think I've used the basic, standard, or advanced touch in...a year and a half? And that was when I was last leveling a crafter from below level 50.
The craft system has barely changed in general since the 2.0 days except for more and more bloat really. While I'm sure people might not too warmed to the idea of some simplification even I've noticed there's quite a few instances of duplication in the current system where higher stuff could just as easily be rolled into existing abilities or replace lower level stuff without any negative impact and to be fair the craft system is well overdue for a cleaning up, not necessarily a nerfing of course but at least some reorganising so it's fittable into 3 crossbars at least.
