Risk will never be added back into a mmo from a AAA company.
Risk =/= casual gameplay.
Thus risk = less subs (mainly casual gamers) = less money
But in all honesty the games are ultra shallow without any risk. Rewards and clearing hard bosses feel honestly almost meaningless in ffxiv compared to those in say Lineage, FFXI, EQ, AA.
i mean risk would be 100x better than mahjong so i would be completely fine if it was added.
course i would much rather see monopoly added myself. that or candyland as i mean who doesn't like candy land?
To my knowledge, the most risky content that they've added into the game, is Eureka.
I believe there is a place in FFXIV for risky content, I just think that the FFXIV design team is not up to the task as they currently are.
FFXIV is a RPG oriented, not some hack'n'slash or e-sport oriented game. The game maybe looks too easy, but it has to let some place for people for their own RP.
And apart of BA, Eureka is not really challenging. You can wipe, yes, so what? Eureka is not what I call fun or risky.
O! I can be killed by some random trash around the area. So fun!
Really?
You want risk and challenge, apart of fair PVP, there's nothing that could be considered as a challenge. Is PK of low level player some kind of risk when you are overstuffed and they are both beginner and unstuffed?
A real "risk" is some kind of PVP with rift system that lead you randomly in an area leveled between -5 and +5 from your level. THIS is risky it challenges both your luck and your skill.
What some players define as "risky", I often define as a nuisance. You really need to be more specific OP, and avoid using derogatory/condescending terms like "care bear" if you want to have a constructive discussion about it.
An example of a common suggestion that grates my nerves is a more risky and dangerous outer world when we are exploring. I definitely understand the desire to have a more interactive outer world, but any hardcore gatherer and/or fisher will tell you that danger is just one of several elements needed for that. Getting from one area to the next without flight should not require covert stealth tactics or assistance from higher level players like the days of old.
However, it would be pretty cool if open world maps had enclosures that inhibits flight, or even mounts all together. They could make such places more dangerous if the rewards for traversing them are worth it the risk of sending you right back to your home point.
I already played Everquest back in 2000 when you could lose a corpse, delevel, have to run back through hostile territory gearless unless and until a cleric came by with their epic weapon... not going back on that ride (even though they did add features like graveyards to the planes...).
They could do wandering world bosses. Basically FATEs that move and drop fun things. Similar ideas are already in the game, they just need to be iterated on.
Odin comes close.
