Forgive me guys, but what is the problem with the steam launcher?

In my country (Brazil) we always try to pick the steam version for monetary reasons (we pay a lot less for the subscription using the steam version - almost half price of the non-steam version). So, we encorage people here to pick steam version instead the other version.

I never see any problem to run steam first and then log in in FFXIV (my steam client runs at system startup, so, it's automatic). So, this thread made me ask this: what is the problem with steam version launcher? '-' Do we have more lag? The game become more unstable? Do we have issues to patch or update the client? Seriously, what's the problem? I never see any...

I just want to understand, not to create any more problems about the change.

Currently, by launching ffxivboot.exe instead of running through Steam, I can:

    1. Avoid Steam handling my games, not have to manually mess with hiding myself on friend's list if I don't necessarily want to share what I'm playing.

    2. Log in to non-Steam accounts of FFXIV, like my wife's account. This came in handy yesterday, I was able to log in and get a house plot that opened up. If this were locked, I wouldn't have been able to.

    3. Launch more than one instance of the game. Referring to #2, I was able to trade her some gil to cover the difference of the price.

    4. Avoid any Steam metrics/traffic that is involved with using it. I play often at work during downtime. "Steam" is going to stand out more than "ffxivboot.exe"

You simply DL the client from SE's web page, punch in your credentials, install and play.
You don't need steam. Never did.

I think I used steam ONCE for the original setup back in 2015 when I bought the game. After that I never again had the steam client running. In fact, Steam thinks FF-XIV isn't even installed (I always have to start a fake setup in order to get to new keys whenever they release expansions).

I would be okay with the limitation if, for example, I could skip the log in process entirely. If I don't have to type my password and OTP everytime I try to run the game, it surely would improve my enjoyment of the game.
I don't understand the exact reason either, and also don't necessarily expect them to outline it in detail because such matters can't always be made public. I just meant that I can see why they would make a decision based on the opportunity to defend against potential fraud, but that it isn't fair that it should inconvenience so many legitimate users in the process.

However from August 29 that will no longer be the case. We will need to launch via the Steam play button, in order to be able to login. If we try to use the client from SE's web page, it'll refuse to log us in.

As I'm sure you are well aware, it takes more than one person to be able to kick a player from a duty, so in all those instances there were at least two people agreeing they'd be better off without you tanking.

    Ah, thank you.
    Well sign me up then.
I have no interest in having to run steam all the time.

When the switch over happens you wont be able to open with the ffxivboot64.exe. You 100% will have to have steam open, be logged in, and open the game through steam. That's the biggest issue people have with the change.

The change was delayed and has not yet occurred. We have heard nothing since. If you don't want to use steam to operate the game then yeah you'll not be happy about this change.

That's why some of us steam users, who do exactly what you do, are asking for a key exchange or just the option to rebuy the game on PC for our account. You currently cannot own a PC / Steam version on the same account. You would have to make a new account and start the game over to escape steam if you needed to.

The main reason for the thread is also the fear of the issues that Steam has had in forcing other games to do this. If you go back and read a lot of the thread you'll see what i'm talking about.

Edit: Oh man i'm slow, sorry for the slow reply Granyala lol

Any moment now it will be revealed that WHM is cheating on SCH with MNK after having had DRG's baby and DRG is WHM's cousin who is already married to PLD.

    Ok. Now I see...
I did never knew that is possible to run 2 or more clients at the same time!

About the first item, I don't have any friend on steam friend list, so no problem to let them know what I'm playing. But, I see your point.

I didn't knew that steam accs are locked and block any other non-steam acc to be opened using the same computer at the same time... (this is really odd).

So, yes, now I see the issues of the change. Even if they don't mess with me (yet).

    Thanks for answering!
