Something something, Piccolo training with Gohan but much worse.
Do you have a source for where it says most of the children end up dying? I just wanna see that for myself.

These are some questions I wonder about, too. Is there any bonding, or is it like Piccolo training? How many children are the male viera mentoring? Do they even have shelter? Is there any real care for the kid's well-being, or are they told to just go out and try to survive. If it turns out the adult male viera is attentive and does carefully take care of the kids, then it must seem like one big daycare. Or is it more like a cold and distant relationship?

When it is revealed that a Viera kit is a male, it will be given into the care of another, that it may learn the ways of the Wood-warder─protectors of the forest. Once every three to five summers, male Viera will descend from the trees to a nearby village to mate. It is at this time, if there are any recently discovered jacks still living amongst the females, that the older male will make them his wards and teach them how to survive without the crutch of companionship.

Only following countless seasons of training and strict adherence to the Word of the Wood will the students themselves earn the title of master, and be allowed to seek solitude. More than few will perish during this brutal rite of passage, further thinning the tribe’s males, until only those with the strongest seed remain.

Yeah, the males have it extremely rough. I'm betting it's extremely cold and distant. You would have to be to keep doing this. You need a strong mentality.

Hmm ok after rereading it, here is what I understand

"Only following countless seasons of training and strict adherence to the Word of the Wood will the students themselves earn the title of master, and be allowed to seek solitude. More than few will perish during this brutal rite of passage, further thinning the tribe’s males, until only those with the strongest seed remain. "

It seems like the males live together only until they successful complete the rite of passage. So they do this rite together. After they become a master, they are allowed to seek solitude. So... do they have the option of not seeking solitude then?

I would not be surprised if some of the men, even the children, decided to abandon their duties. Of course, if they did that, the female viera who do adhere to the word of the wood would have no interest in them.
Still, just like there are some female viera who decide to become adventurer's, it wouldn't be surprising for some of the men to do the same.
