We're losing the first two for our arcanist/summoner/scholar pet—but not for our chocobo companion. So for general world solo play we can still have a tank. In solo duties, things will be different, but I'm willing to see how it plays out.
The only difference is that you can't heal your chocobo as a SMN so it is a far less effective tank. Like Titan was in 4.0 when they took away sustain. Sustain was added back primarily for healing Titan in the overworld.

I've never played a melee class in this game because face tanking really flusters me. I levelled BLM primarily in dungeons. I find it rather difficult to dodge all the AOEs in this game (for both reaction time and lag purposes) so having the mob attacking something else has always been the way I've gotten through. I never summoned Bahamut outside of instances because of the agro thing.

I get that others might not have needed this. But I did and so I am sad that I will no longer be able to main the class I've played on and off since 2.0.
